Elec Need Help choosing Motor and ESC

Not new to R/C but new to electrics. Do mild 3D with my 30cc gasser and UCanDo nitro but wish to purchase an electric to do the same. A very knowledgable acquaintance suggested the Extreme Flight, 48 inch, Extra 300. Have seen the plane perform in person and like what I saw. Contacted Extreme Flight today in order to buy it and take advantage of their combo deal which includes the plane, a motor (Torque 2814/820 Brushless) and ESC (Airboss 45 Elite). They have the plane in stock but not the motor and ESC. The battery required is a 4C - 2500 mAp.
Would appreciate some suggestions for a good quality motor and ESC for this plane that I could purchase separately. Thank you. . .

Re: Need Help choosing Motor and ESC

John,

When looking for a new plane myself a while ago I considered the EF Extra 300 & determined that the Torque motor was equivalent to an e-flite Power 32e or in the Scorpion brand that I use - a 30-2612. I would have used a 60 Amp ESC either an e-flite, Scorpion or Pentium (HK brand).

Re: Need Help choosing Motor and ESC

There are lots of great motor choices out there.

Great Hobbies distributes Scorpion motors in Canada. Their US distributor is Innova8tive designs, but the prices are very similar. The 3026-12 has been replaced by the SII-3026-710. You could also try the SII-3020-890 as the 3026 is quite a bit larger than the stock Torque motor.

You can use Scorpions Commander series of ESC's. Another option is Castle ICE series. At those power levels, a premium ESC like Castle or Scorpion isn't much more expensive than the cheaper HK ESC's and has far more programming features.

Some other high quality motor options:

Motrolfly DM2820-950: http://www.subsonicplanes.com/Motrolfly_Motors.html

Pair it up with Motrolfly's ESC's. They are very good.

My favorite 'value' priced motor is the Infinite series from OKHobby. Unfortunately, they are out of stock at the moment as their entire motor lineup is being refreshed.

For more power, the Infinite 3025-890: http://okhobby.com/product.php?id_product=779

For something similar to the Torque 2814, the Infinite 3020-970: http://okhobby.com/product.php?id_product=775

Good luck!

Re: Need Help choosing Motor and ESC

The Scorpion 3026 series is wayyyy too big for a 48" extra. I ran a 3026-710 in my 3DHS 57" extra on 4s and was pulling just under 1200 watts. Power was insane!! Way, way, way, overkill for a 48" airframe.

Not for what he wants to do (3D). I would say go for it as the 3026-710 cranks one long prop and that is what he wants for 3D. I have a pair in my Hanger 9 Twin Otter and pulls great ! . Just about have the floats ready too !!!

Re: Need Help choosing Motor and ESC

Shawnlh is right, 3026 is way too big! It's more 2.5 oz heavier than the recommended Torque motor!!!!!

At most, go with the 3020-890kv, but I would suggest the 3014-830kv Scorpion.
