Club affiliation memberships-a common thing?
Looking for opinion/input.
Our Club (Whitby Aeromodellers) allows an affiliate membership at a reduced cost to any member of most other Clubs, (generally from neighboring Clubs). One of them has recently decided to stop reciprocating. I myself am an affiliate member of the Oshawa Club. What do you think of the pros & cons of having these in place? Thanks for any input.

Re: Club affiliation memberships-a common thing?
I think it's a great idea. I know the Prince Edward Radio Control Club was doing it with a couple of other local clubs... don't know if they still are.
Of course, most clubs operate on a very tight budget and rely on the income from memberships to maintain their facilities, pay rent and host events. It's a double edged sword. |

I like the idea of associate memberships. I have noticed some clubs offer them but haven't taken advantage of one as yet personally, although I would if the clubs surrounding me offered it.

I don't see that here, but think it's a great idea!

Re: Club affiliation memberships-a common thing?
I think an affiliate program with a more extensive reach would be advantageous, (not to hijack) but what happens if a consortium of local clubs got together and created an affiliate program that encompasses multiple clubs of any given area?
Example: Greater GTA has about 6 clubs in the general area, people that want to join the affiliate program can provide payment to the consortium, identifies their "Primary" club and provides an affiliate fee. The affiliate fee is distributed to the "Member Clubs" of the affiliation the "Primary Club" gets the full fees. It's a form of extra revenue, and chances are, the visitor with affiliate membership would not take advantage of the affiliate fields on a regular basis. Of course for this to happen, there would need to be cooperation between several organizations. Just thinking out loud.

Re: Club affiliation memberships-a common thing?
We pioneered it here in the Quinte area. Basically, if you are a member of a MAAC afilliated club (with proof) and a member of MAAC in good standing, you can enjoy an affiliate membership for half price.
There are conditions: 1/ The aspiring Associate Member must already be a member in good standing of another M.A.A.C. affiliated club, and a member in good standing of M.A.A.C. 2/ The aspiring Associate Member must already have received his wings from his home club’s Chief Instructor or designate. However, the aspiring Associate Member may still be requested to prove his/her proficiency to the satisfaction of the host club’s Chief Instructor or designate. 3/ The status of Associate Member would grant the member right to fly at the host club field, providing that said member adheres to all M.A.A.C. and host club guidelines and rules regarding safety and conduct while at the host club field. 4/ The status of Associate Member would not grant said member any voting rights on any matter before the membership, nor would the Associate Member be eligible to hold any office or be a director of the club. Neither would an Associate Member have any claim on the assets of the host club if the host club should be dissolved for any reason. 5/ The suggested fee for obtaining a Flying Associate Membership is one-third to one-half the normal annual membership fee. 6/ Upgrading to full membership would be possible by paying the difference between the full and Associate Membership fees. 7/ The host club reserves the right to alter the conditions attached to the Associate Membership Class or to rescind the Associate Class in its entirety by majority vote of the voting membership. You need to offer proof of your competence to fly. Generally if you have a club member vouch for you that is good enough, but we reserve the right to have our chief instructor or his designate put you through your paces. Usually it does not mean you will fly any more, but you can spread it around enjoying other fields. Also, there is no need for a reciprocal arrangement with other clubs. For instance if someone wants to vacation here for a month from say Windsor or Montreal, he could still be an associate member even though we have no arrangement with the club there. Maybe it's someone who passes through irregularly and wants to fly without arranging for an "escort" every time.

Re: Club affiliation memberships-a common thing?
Hmm, sounds like it's a positive in most minds. good input already.
Dave H.- nicely structured. Joe T.-interesting, (I personally would sign up), but we all know how politics/attitudes can get involved if things get 'big'. I like the informal with simple rules to abide by template. More more!!

All good thoughts for the hobby and Dave H. has provided some excellent proven
guide-lines/rules, particulary rule #2 ( You don't need some yahoo showing up and distrupting ur own club guidelines/rules). |

In my own case I am a member (currently president) of Prince Edrward R C Flying Club, a full member of the Bay of Quinte Aeromodellers and an associate member of the Brighton R C Hawks. It does work, and often associates upgrade to full membership.
