Saito 72 spewing excessive oil out crankcase vent
I have a Saito 72 that while running just fine, spews an incredible amount of oil out the crankcase vent. I have it side mounted in a sport plane and have a piece of fuel tubing to vent the oil out the bottom of the plane.
There has to be 5 times as much oil all over the bottom and left side of the plane as there is directly behind the muffler. I am running muffler pressure and 18% four stroke fuel. Is this normal? Any idea why it might be this way? Does anyone else see this? The engine runs fine in every other way. Compression is good and good power. I should add that I also have a Saito 91 and it doesn't vent nearly this much oil. TIA -Rob- |

Hello Rob; All the oil has to go somewhere. I have a Saito 100 twin that has a pump system to tsy to get the oil through the bearings to the vent and out. It prefers to drool the oil down the left header until the wind catches it, and nothing comes out the vent. In your case, you at least know that the oil is getting to the places it's supposed to be going to. In my case, I know that the oil is not going to the place it's supposed to be going to.
As the engine "breaks in" it will require less fuel, as you will be leaning it out. Less fuel will mean less oil, and your problem will diminish. |
