First crash
Just thought I would write to say that About three weeks ago I had my first crash. It was not that bad, should have taken couple hours to fix but because of work schedule it took a week and half. It is up and flying again and lesson learned. The closest that we can figure is that the grass was a little longer than I had been use to and I did not have enough speed to be airborne, so the plane took a hard right at about ten feet off the ground and landed the hard way. But I got it fixed and recovered in the area where it broke and it flies straight and just like before the crash. Like I said lesson learned.

I remember my first crash
It was about 3 or 4 weeks after I got my wings and I did a Split S in this grove where all the trees were cut so you could land but anyways I was came out of it on an agle and I went behind the trees and then smack.....the un-masakable sound of snaping balsa But it flew again and a lesson learned.

I started to get into this hobby 2 times, both times my first crash was on the very first flight.

Rcpilot,
Finally somebody admits they crashed on there maiden. I was starting to think everybody was an expert from the get go. I know with instructors nowadays it takes a little longer but it does happen. John

First time, it was the builder of the plane who took it up and crashed it before I even had the chance to have the sticks. THat was in early 80's. He fixed it all up and I got some lessons on it, but never soloed.
Second time I started here in Canada in 98 and was with the instructor, but without a buddy box, yes, the buddy boxes are a savier.

guess my point is to never give up. i still dont have my wings and i probly nexer will i have my own flying field right infrount of my house i guess living on a farm is not that bad. man i allways have spectators that drive buy and stop. lol they dont no what they are missing. |

I've crashed twice. Once my fault.
First time I was flying my Superstar during training. As the instructor took it into land, control was suddenly lost. Did quite a bit of damage to the wing as it was caught in a tree. Anyway, it turns out that the trainer button had jammed. Some of the plastic film that protects the metal finish on the radio had somehow gotten caught into the button. I see Futaba has changed the trainers to toggle switches now. Second time I was landing my Avistar. It must have stalled or something as it dropped out of the sky. Luckly it was less than a foot above the ground and wasn't going too fast. Ripped one of the ailerons out of its sockets. No serious damage just a quick repair. Perhaps I should get a black box for it.

My first crash came when an instructor took my LT-40 ARF up for it's checkout flight and landed it on the nose wheel springing the firewall. I was impressed. Since then the venereable LT has had 3 major impacts and many minor ones.
I envy you guys that crash only once or twice; or is it because you are unable to get out to the field often? So far, what with various happpenings, I have had "hard landings" with seven planes this season, one of them 4 times. (Only one totalled) Of the seven two are on the rebuild bench now, and I hope to have them both flying for the New Years Day Frozen Finger Fun Fly. Like anything else, exposure creates opportunity, so the more you fly the more chances you have for a hard landing. I am often out at the field 5 evenings a week during the summer, and all day at least one day each weekend, so I get many chances to make a mistake. Dave
