Finally Finished (nearly) 1928 Air Racer

Hi Guys;

I broke my camera and will not buy one till the Boxing Day sales. Here's a short video.

I have just finished the final assembly and set up of my 1928 1/3rd scale Heath Baby Bullet. It is a scratch project. I actually bought the partially built fuse sides, stab and plans from a fellow modeller about 10 years ago. I had the plans and the parts stored while I was scrounging parts for it and working on other things. I started on it faithfully about 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with a rare cancer and during my treatment process of over 2 years. It has been great therapy for me, now that I am cured??? and back to normal???

I have covered it with sig Koverall and then shot it with acrylic latex paint that I bought at Michael's. I followed the latex Vallaincourt method and it worked out well. Looked at different ways to fuel proof it and ended up getting some rattle cans of clear Lustrekote that can no longer be bought in Canada (it's a French language labeling thing). I asked for input on other methods and wasn't happy, I test tried clear Tremclad but it went on too heavy and didn't flow well. I have used LustreKote in the past so I got some out of the states.

I have shoe horned in a saito 182 twin. It was designed for an OS 120/160 that will fly it well. It's a racer so a little extra horsepower won't hurt.

I made up an on board glow setup and I am not yet happy with the function of it at this point. I have the winter to sort that out. Gotta get a pilot too.

You should see it at Maidenfest if there is one.

Wingspan 72 inches
Length 59 inches
Weight 10 lbs 14 oz

Looks like you have a really nice plane there and - I would agree - IT WILL BE A ROCKET WITH THAT ENGINE!

BTW - Congrats on your recovery!

Re: Finally Finished (nearly) 1928 Air Racer

I love it John, excellent job. I'll try and get around for a visit and a closer look.
Do you think there is enough cooling for the 182?
Regarding your onboard glow the McDanials dual glow system will take all the guess work out. They are by far the best IMO.

Nice work buddy!!!!!!!

Re: Finally Finished (nearly) 1928 Air Racer

Thanks for the comments guys. Hey Bill, I have looked at the McDaniel system but they seem to want a lot of cash for it?? I think the engine should be cool enough, there is enough of the heads sticking out into the open air and there is some breathing room through the firewall, I drilled 4 large holes, it's not solid. I doubt with the motor that I will be running it wide open too much either .

Re: Finally Finished (nearly) 1928 Air Racer

One of the reasons McDanials are a little dear John is because they come with batteries and charger.
They are a very good complete package.

Re: Finally Finished (nearly) 1928 Air Racer

Nice, Very NICE!!! I would go with the Sullivan on board glow, one cell 1300ma lipo would be plenty for 3 of 4 flights. It took less than 500ma to top up mine.

You mentioned your not concerned about dead sticks, looks like you have plenty of room to reach hand held glow drivers.
