Engine problems - Help

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I took a dunk with the float plane about the beginning of June. Brought the engine home, cleaned the water out, lubed it up and forgot to take the lube out. Went to Australia for 3 weeks where I couldn't touch it.

Now, looks like rusty oil coming out of the needle valve (leak) and there is no idle wherever I set the needle valve. It lights, and revs up to where it should be at about 1/4 throttle.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

First thing I would do is a complete dissassembly and inspection/cleaning...

Did you run it for quite awhile after the dunking. I've had that suggested to me and it appears to have kept my engines good after submersion.

It's nice to have experienced local guys with good advice.

I would also recommend a good cleaning with kerosene for the metal parts. What did you use to lube it before you went away? If after you disassemble it again and you do not find any damage to the engine itself I would think about replacing the seals. Most manufactures sell a seal kit for their engines. Perhaps the lube you used deteriorated the seals on or around the carb. Also check to make sure nothing bent even a little with the impact. I don't think this is likely but it could cause leaks if something is just a little off.

Just my procedures after something like this happens.

Good luck

Ted

P.S. What engine is this?

problems ...

First - Andrew, the cylinder head screws are pretty much seized in the engine, they will not move - None of them.

Second - After I dunked, I was so concerned about the engine rusting that I pulled what I could apart, and dumped the lube (electric motor oil?) on the bearings, down the carb, exhaust ports, everywhere I could. Then, I left it to pack.

Third - This is some kind of clone of a Megatech engine. It was casted with a 40 on the side, but it has the size of a 46.

Fourth - I am still looking for the rust source.

I hope this information is useful to you now.

Thanks again guys

Heat will take care of the engine head bolts. I would first try using a high wattage soldering gun or iron, touch it to the head bolts one at a time and then try (while hot) to remove them.

I myself like to use a small torch but you have to be carefull not to overdue it.

How much heat and how much time with the torch?
I have a propane torch that gives a lot of heat, and I also have one of those mini soldering torches. Which would be better?

I use a standard (regular size torch with a fine tip) size, the hobby ones cant give enough heat as it is dissipated too easily.

Just enough to break the screws free - should be just too hot to handle, no where near enough to distort anything. Maybe 200-300 degrees.

You can concentrate on the screw heads.
