WOW!!!! I still cant believe the angle of side slip that that jet had to stay lined up with the runway.

Man, they had to be really close to their cross wind limits!!! If I hadn't seen Hamburg, I would have said Pearson. I think they go out of their way to put planes on cross-wind landings. They only seem to use the right runways when its really bad visibility, or the winds are so strong you can't stand on the ramp. I'm sure they have their reasons for the runway choices, beyond just weather, but it almost seems they go out of their way for crazy crosswind landings. Daren

an addendum to Randy's comment...

"click your heels three times and say 'there's no place like home''

I've landed in Hamburg a number of times, but nothing quite so spectacular as that. That pilot saved a few lives and it only cost him a few dozen landing lights and probably a few tires. Good job.

This may have been a case of the pilot relying on the computers to handle all the mental work of making a good landing.

Too bad this was right down in the corner (low speed, low throttle settings, everything hanging out in the breeze, plus major wind activity not right down the runway.)

Pilot should have exercized brain cells and made one of three decisions:
shoot a landing to see if it is doable
abort approach and try again when wind conditions improve
divert to another airport with better conditions

Of course, being a pilot is also a "macho" profession, so the testosterone may have been up to everyone's knees in the cockpit.

I've been on airplanes that have aborted approaches and made landings right in the lower-left corner of the flight envelopes. None of them were exactly fun while they were happening.

I'm sure that's the same pilot that flew me into Montreal last summer. Felt like one of those textbook "tip-wheel-wheel-tip" landings.
