""NEW"" 126" Carden Edge 540 - Build Thread

Oh, ya

My 43% Carden Edge 540 arrived today in 5 beautiful boxes!

This is Carden's second 126" offering after their very successful Extra 300/260 kit. I was lucky enough to land kit #13 of 15 from the first run in November that Caroline and Dennis just finished up.

So what's the game plan on this one

Purpose: IMAC plane w/ capabilities for FreeStyle routine

Target weight: 41-43lbs

Mods:
* As much lightening as possible up front (target = 10+ oz) to offset the weight of the big 4-banger (m-box rework, lightening of cowl ring, hatch lightening, TI or AL hardware)
* Just a bit of lightening aft of the CG (target 6-10oz) including some lightening in the fuse side sheeting and opening up the belly core of the fuse
* Wing coring at the tips
* 2 RXs - 1 in tail powering rudder and elevators with dedicated 2-cell Lipo in tail + 1 Rx in fuse powering ignition, throttle, ailerons with 2-cell Lipo (for weight distribution, to eliminate long servo leads to tail and to allow for moderate fuse lightening)

Components:
* Mintor 220 4-cylinder with 2-into-1 headers and tuned cans
* Carden's lightened AL landing gear
* Whiterose tailwheel & likely whiterose main wheels and TI axles
* Thunderbolt R/C's new 42% Products Zeus Ignition Modules (x2 because of twin ignitions)

This build thread:
* Because this is a completely new 126" Carden my goal is only to show the differences from the 43% Extra 300/260. Aside from explaining the differences, I will try to limit my explanations and only post pictures.

Cheers

Trev

Can 2 receivers work at the same time with a 2.4 system ?

Re: ""NEW"" 126" Carden Edge 540 - Build Thread

While I have Jack Durgan's 43% Extra 300 plans in front of me, I took out the Edge m-box pieces and set them ontop of the Extra 300 plans

Here's what I see for differences so far....

MotorBox
*Mbox of Edge is about 1" longer than E300
*Both Mboxs are about the same depth
*Mbox of Edge is about 3/4" more narrow than E300, but the winged tabs are wider making the overal width the same as the E300.

General
*Overall length - tip of spinner to tip of rudder = 117" - exact same between E300 and Edge
* CG of Extra is center of wing tube. CG of Edge is about 2" ahead of wing tube
* CG to backplate of spinner: Edge = 29", E300 = 31"
* CG to hingeline of rudder: Edge = 68", E300 = same
* Rudder - Edge rudder is 2 1/4" longer and nearly 3" taller than E300 (WOW)
* Width - Edge is same width as E300 at cowl, but 3/4" narrower at rudder hinge line.

So what does this mean????
- My Mintor is much shorter than a DA200 and same weight (so Mintor will make a plane more nose heavy than DA200)
- Because the Edge is shorter ahead of the CG and longer behind the CG (naturally more tail heavy), the more nose heavy Mintor should be well suited!
- It has a massive rudder and I`ll go with (3) 7950 servos to be sure!

Yep!! You just have to bind them each separately to the Radio!

Re: ""NEW"" 126" Carden Edge 540 - Build Thread

Here`s a few other pictures of the plans of the Edge!

A few more changes:
* The fuse sides are about 1" shorter on the Edge than on the E300, but the belly and t-deck are deeper making the fuse the same overall height.
* Looks like Dennis went back to the original design of hatch (I wonder why??)
* Check out the shaping required on the top of the fuse - brings back nightmares of Jim Daly's Yak shaping!

Get out the swiffer hunny - I see dust in our future

Yep... totally different shape and I'm really impressed with the amount of changes Dennis makes to get a kit the way he wants it!

Trev, you are a machine!

Lol, I just finished up a Guillow P-51 I had started last year! Take that, Giant Carden Edge builder! Let me tell you, 1/16 stringers suck ass!

Can't wait to get myself setup with the Yak so I can work with more man-sized-hand materials. It may be next winter's build at this point, though. And my trailer project is now buried in snow, so that's not getting done until the spring.

However, I'm pretty set on the Yak, so I'm not getting anything else airplane related until I can get that kit!

Tyler,

If you are after a Carden 32.5% Yak kit there are a couple for sale on FG at a good price!
