Looking for opinions

It looks like my new project, a MRAerodesign Beaver, will need a gas engine, it's not looking like an electric solution is practical.
So, what are the member's thoughts on which engine, in the 40cc/Zenoah38 class is the smoothest running and dependable? My gas engine experience is limited to the early Quadra 35 vintage, so you see how dated I am, and don't want to shake the bird to bits.
I intend to run on wheels initially, and add the floats later on. It should come in at about 22 lbs or so on wheels.
Any input will be gratefully received.

Re: Looking for opinions

Hello

I have the same kit and I will be installing one of my Brison 2.4 (40cc) engines. I have three with the oldest about 15 years old. Many many flights on it and it still runs like a champ.

It is mounted in a Dynaflight Super Cub at the moment and has no trouble at all lifting it off in a very short distance. With the battery ignition and mechanically adjusted timing the idle is fantastic. I use a 20 X 8 Zinger Pro on it and there is lots of power available.

We have been having trouble with carb diaphrams lately due to ethanol in the gas making the rubber hard. Shell has a premium grade with no ethanol.

Every once in a while you will find one for sale on RCU and RCC. It looks like the fellow at Revolution is getting out of them maybe.

Anyway good luck with yours....

Re: Looking for opinions

There is a review of the Mr Aerodesign Beaver in the January 09 issue of R/C Report by Dick Petit, and according to him the Saito FG-36 4C gas engine is a perfect match .His finished weight was 23.5 lbs(3lbs nose weight). He covered his with 3/4 oz cloth ,minwax polyurethane.According to Dick his plane could do very nice short field takeoffs with this engine..plus it sounds great ,less vibration, and it burns less fuel..

Re: Looking for opinions

I have a MR Aerodesign Pilatus -120inch-, power is a Zenoha 62. Over 30hrs of airtime last 18 months, never a deadstick. I have a Zenoha 45 which is even smother running. That would be my first choice. As for the Brisson also mentioned, I find them as reliable.
Hope this helps it is only my personal opinion.

Re: Looking for opinions

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up a Brison 2.4 with the solid state ignition system. Next job, finish the aircraft. Thanks again for the insight, RCC is the place to be!

Re: Looking for opinions

Good choice, but more important you are that much closer to enjoying your Beaver.
Enjoy, -Dale-
