whooo, look at al the reply's.
ron: thanks for the suggestions. Thought about tail mount servo's. Had to figure out engine first. I was going to build the turtle decks and carve them out and weigh it, Then try to see how much lighter it would be built up. Surfaces- figured bigger now, or redo later if needed. Light covering is already on the shelf. terry: 4 stroke isnt out of the question, but i am open minded right now as to power choice. mike: ill get ahold of you in the next few days to get your opinion. Or you could post here or PM me. WildBill: i was mad when i saw someone sell that r/c showcase 1.4 before i could even get on the net that day. It seems to be a good choice, fairly light weight, decent price ( only a wee bit more than a big 4 stroke) Cheeeeeep to run and i love the smell of mixed gas! scaleguy: I was going to pick the engine when the plane is at least 3/4 built, so i can get one that balances out without extra weight. Extra weight might as well be bigger engine! Unlimited vertical isnt needed, but its nice to have. Im not going crazy on light weight, i just want a good flyer, thats still strong. The tail is framed 3/8 sticks, I though about the C/F gear, ill wait a bit to decide that. The stock gear is 1/8 or 3/16 Al looks decently strong and med. weight. Ill try to get the tank near the Cg if i get a pumper or gass engine. Plug in wings. The MicroPro might get in this bird, then ill be able to mix my days away. 2 aileron servos are a given, even my .40 size stuff has em. Pull-pull is also a given, big servo way out back seems silly. No pics yet, i just got it 2 weeks ago. 2 other aircraft on the board too. i've only glued the motor box together and the LG plate. I was waiting to get some tip from U guys before i went too far ahead. for the price of a big (120-180) 4 stroke or less or even the 140- 160 O.S. engines, there are a few small gassers out there RCS, MVVS,.... I think id like to run one of them so i can fly ALOT without having to stock up on 55 gallon drums of glo fuel. ANY opinions? I am still wide open on this. Cheers guys Christian |

1/4 Scale Extra 230
Hello there,
Just wanted to drop you a line about this airplane.. I have put about 250 flights on one with engines ranging from 120 Thunder tiger to Saito 150 for stroke.. This is a great airplane.. The RCS 1.4 would work very well in this aiplane if you kept it at 10lbs or less.. Mine ranged from 9.75 to 10 lbs and would hover and climb out no troubles. Did very nice flat spins and if I was a little better I could have gotten a knife edge loop out of it.. I only ever made the first half. Knife edge was a dream... snaps were pretty as you please. Oh yeah an OS 160 would be killer on it.. you would never need full throttle. (very often :0) Good luck Riverdancer |

whoo hooo, ive got an older saito 150 coming to me!
better get building soon, ive only done a few minor things so far. Will the 1/8 " ply engine box hold up to the power of the 150? Ill triangle brace the inside and toothpick dowel the 1/4" firewall on, is this enough? Its been suggested to me to use an aluminum wing tube instead of the plywood blades for the main wing spars. How the hell do you get a 1" hole in a foam wing and get it all lined up nice-nice? Im off to get building. cheers guys christian |

I had the Sig Cap EX. It was 73" wing span and I installed a Saito 1.50. I found it to be a very good combination. You won't be disappointed!

Christian,
You can put the wing tube in, by using the wing faom cradle to support the wing, notching the wing tube end to act as a cutter, and making up a wooden guide to help get it all straight. I just checked the thread I had last year - the pics are gone! Doh...

EXTRA 230 : STEP 2
ok, now the engine is picked. Should a 150 4 stroke be hard or soft mouted? never ran a 4 stroke before, or an engine this big. Will the 1/8 ply engine box hold up?
Anyone have a new/used mount for an engine this big for sale? I guess i need to figure out what servo's to use. Ive got a hitec 700 already on hand for the rudder. What torque ratings are needed on aileron and elevator? 75 oz's good enough or shou I shoot for 90 or more? The elevalor is going to be enlarged by a little bit and maybe a small bit of counterbalence area added too. I plan on 1 servo for each ele. half with short CF pushrods. Same for the Aileron. All suggestions welcome. cheers christian |
