Hey Andrew,

I said nothing negative about Monocote . It's what I use as well.

I just believe that we have to be more careful when someonse new asks for help on something, we shouldn't immediate respond with "buy something else"

I think we all sometimes forget that the newer folks aren't quite used to our "humor" yet

Hey Andrew:
I'm a monocote fan also! I've got enough here to do the outside of my house I'm not "knocking" ultracote or any of the other coverings, in fact my little Cap 232 is half mono' and half ultra'and I've had no trouble bonding it to each other! I guess I like the monocote "cause I've had such good luck with it and used so much of it

With the right technique you can put monokote over ABS, foam, fibreglass, and of course ply and other woods as well as the balsa. I used to have troubles getting it to stay down on plywood. Just had to get used to it.

I have used monokote with solarfilm and coverite, and but not with ultracote. What happens Kevin? Incompatible? Monokote is generally cheaper (by a buck) than Ultracote too

Actually, the ONLY film that I have tried to use (three times, same results each time) and absolutely will not buy again is Coverite 21st Century film. I found it "soft", and hate the delayed shrink. It is no where near as tough as Monokote either, have it on one wing and it sags a lot. But it may be my lack of experience with it, as it is a different film...

Just the 1/4 seams were overlapped Kevin and the monocote overlapped the ultracote. 52 flights and it hasn't lifted yet, but you know the rest of the story

Do you guys use a sock on the iron? I want my next plane to be my best effort, not done in 3 hours flat like I sometimes do.

Jan,
If you dont use a sock you will get all these micro scratches. Using a sock gives a smooth finish you cannot get otherwise (except maybe with a new shoe) but you have to compensate for the bit slower heat transfer and the sock just take a bit of getting used to. It will give a great finish though.

I posted a thread a while back about this metal/plastic polish "Peek" that they sell at Canadian Tire. I tried it on Monokote and it will polish out the small scratches! Wow!
