Zipper, Missile With A Man In It, Widowmaker, Flying Coffin, Etc etc.....no matter what you call it there really isn't many jets quite as futuristically cool as the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter!

So with that, let's build one!!

Here is a photo of my previous one:

This will actually be my second one-oh-four from the splendid Avonds kit. I learned a few things from the first that I aim to repeat, and maybe not repeat on this one.

For example, don't get it too far away going away from you.....it's very difficult to see, and this is the result:

Please feel free to share thoughts and suggestions along the way!

Let's get started....

Despite popular belief, beer, waffles, and chocolates AREN'T the best thing to come out of Belgium......THIS IS!!!

A kit from Philip Avonds. http://www.avonds.com

First step is to clean (relative term) up the workshop.

PA offers the kit in two versions, ducted fan and turbine. They are essentially the same, with the main difference being the ducted fan version has slightly enlarged inlet ducting vs the turbine version with scale sized ducts. Because of this scale main gear can't be used on the ducted fan version. Some time back I picked up a used set of scale gear online and thus this version is the turbine version.

So, this is what the ARF looks like when it arrives.

I'm going to document the build in pics and time lapse video for kicks as well as here. Figured it may be cool at the end to put a compilation of clips together.

So, first step is to glue the LE and TE's on the wings and stabs. Btw, that's balsa wood if it looks unfamiliar.

After the glue has cured the LE and TE is roughly planed and sanded to shape. Its nice working with these due to their relatively small size!

To be continued....hope this proves interesting guys!

I'm in!

Beautifully large bird, with a cool history.

The time lapse is great, but with the slightly moving camera it's awesome!
