Delta Flew
Hi Guys,
The new Delta flew last Sunday and after a few control surface throw mods, and a minor repair from a dislodged nose gear door due to an air line restrictor keeping the nose gear unlocked, it is ready to fly again. The plane flies very sweetly now! It is still in primer with a few decals and I will paint it this winter if it survives my flight abilities in Moose Jaw this weekend! Len |

Hi Kevin,
It's foam cores covered in 64th ply, glassed with over-weave cloth and West resin, primered in K&B Ultrapoxy. The fuselage is 7 formers including the nose ring. The last former is the engine mount. It extends to the 75% span point and the TE is carbon top and bottom. The two formers ahead of the engine are also out to the fins and tie together to the gear blocks and the fins and the servo wells, and the speed brakes. It is all like a tinkertoy set the way it plugs together. I can twist the tips and the nose will lift, it's that strong! The fuselage is planked with 1/8 th balsa strips, and the hatch runs from the middle of the tank to the front of the nose gear. Easy to work on and still very strong. The fuselage has a 1/4 x 3/8 spruce keel and spruce stringers that run at the hatch sides etc. All up dry it weighs 14.5 pounds, until I paint it and that will add another pound or so. The target weight was 16 pounds which would yield a 25 oz/sq ft wing loading. The CLA is far enough aft that I did not get any fishy flight at all. The really big issue was hardware placement to complete the balance as the engine is too far aft. I will bring it forward about 3" on the next iteration. I made the mistake of mounting the controller and the pump in a box under the slope just ahead of the engine. The pump would have made balancing easier AHEAD of the CG... Next Time for sure... Len |

Hi Nony,
Each wing is 23.5" in spand and the fuselage is 5.5" making it all 52.5" tip to tip. It's not overly large but the wings have a deep sweep in them that is less than evident from the picture. The wing root chord is 38" plus 2.5" of elevon. In the air it looks just like a lawn dart! Len |

Len,
I take it thats your own design? Looks fast, and at 16 pounds with what looks to be a Moores KJ66 I think ballistic will be a good description?!?

Hi Andrew,
Yes it is fast! I flew it at the Moose Jaw Jet Rally this passed weekend and it was gorgeous in their skies! It handles like a puppy but I still have some trouble getting it to "stick" down on landing. It seems to want to jump back into the sky. I am starting to use a bit of down as soon as it touches and that seems to correct the "leaping" issue. I did break the nose on Friday (lawn dart impersonation) but it is already in the repair stage. I hope to have it ready to go again for the Portage Fun Fly this coming weekend! Len |

staying down
Len, Your model looks like a hybrid Enforcer...Sounds like you have experienced the classic 'ROO HOP' syndrome many deltas have. I would suggest shimming rear of turbine so you have approx 2 degrees down thrust from level horizontal mounting of engine. All ROOs are recommended to have this mod. just use washers under rear of mount. Another tip is try and get use to slow flight characteristics so you can land nice and slow and once down get right off elevator as ground effect helps suck delta model designs down well, down thrust aids taxiing as well....Enjoy!
Cheers- |

Marty, I am curious why angling the engine at a slight down angle will make it easier to stick the landings? Maybe I should also do that on my Super Reaper?
Just asking because I am curious... not questioning your experience.. My Reaper will also bounce if I dont bleed off ALL the excess speed. The darn thing just want to glide forever sometimes I find if I hold down elev. and apply the wheel brakes right as I touch down, I can keep it planted and it slows fast, a plus on my short grass strip.

Hi Marty,
Like Andrew, I am curious as to how raising the rear of the engine, which will provide aft downthrust or nose upthrust, will affect the bounce issue. I was under the impression that the 'Roo needed the aft downthrust to alleviate the over thrust from the "higher than mid wing" mount position of the engine, allowing an easier rotation at takeoff, and less pitch change from thrust changes. I have little experience with the 'Roo, except to say that they were the most flown aircraft at the Moose Jaw meet this passed weekend. They performed flawlessly, but they also had a very slight tendency to bounce their landings, but much less so than my Delta. One fellow had main gear brakes and did as Andrew does, and by applying a slight amount of drag brake before landing he was able to counteract the nose bounce. Another fellow did not have brakes, and he was 'planting' the nose with some down elevon on touch down. Thanks, Len |
