MAAC and the sport flyer
So. The latest MAAC mag shows up, big announcement on insurance. As I read it, unless one is a contest flyer, or associated with a MAAC club and its field, the sport flyer is no longer covered by MAAC insurance.
Ergo, why spend seventy-five bucks a year for magazine? One less reason to belong to MAAC; I am sad to say that, been a member on and off since 1966, but the last reason to belong to MAAC just disappeared for me, 'cuz I am in the sticks, far away from MAAC fields or clubs.... Mind you, some guys will be pleased with my exit from MAAC! |

Re: MAAC and the sport flyer
This has nothing to do with being a contest flyer. This is not the doing of the Association. This sad state of affairs has been dictated to us by the insurance company.
If you fly alone and your only reason for being a MAAC member was the insurance then you are right. There is no point in being a member because you will not be insured anyway flying alone on an unregistered field. If you wish to have insurance coverage you will have to make other arrangements. You are not alone in this, this will affect a large number of current MAAC members, unfortunately. Ed S |

Re: MAAC and the sport flyer
Start your own club. You can be president and call all the shots. Register you field and all is good.

Starting your own club may or may not work for a number of reasons.....e.g., although a club with 4 or 5 members satisfies the letter of the law so to speak, I'm not convinced at the end of the day that it satisfies the 'spirit' of the law. What I'm getting at is, if you are flying in a remote area by yourself I'm not convinced that getting 4 other MAAC members from out of the area to join on paper just to get MAAC's blessing would pass the smell test under fine scrutiny. Up until this year we assumed that we were covered by the MAAC insurance policy but as it sits now I understand this is no longer the case, regardless of how much deductible I am willing to pay. I guess it is what it is, I can live with it. I may be wrong here and stand to be corrected....Ron |

Re: MAAC and the sport flyer
With park flyers becoming more and more popular this is definately the wrong direction if MAAC is hoping to grow it's numbers. We should be trying to offer park flyer insurance and incentives like the AMA is doing.

AMA insurance is totally different from ours. AMA members have to use their homeowners coverage first. The AMA itself, not any insurance company, will pick up any extra. The AMA also has close to 200,000 memberships to help pay for that. ED S |

Park Fliers (as I understand them) are largely folks that buy a toy on a whim and try it out in a local piece of property... with no training, in the middle of a populated area...and they are VERY likely to have a problem and hit a PERSON, CAR, BUILDING and then our insurance claims go UP and our policy fees go WAY UP! Even if they are qualified MAAC pilots - accidents still happen and there you are - still in the middle of a populated area with lots of things to hit. So; at the end of the day we are still left with a problem - how to get Reasonably Priced Insurance and Why MAAC? The key word here is 'REASONABLY', if you have unlimited funds EVERYBODY would be covered for EVERYTHING all the time. But we are on a budget so this is what WE can AFFORD. You could always ask MAAC to raise their rates. Why MAAC? - Someone has to represent us, why not them? They are group of our peers, duely elected for us, by us - if you don't like what they are doing call your ZD, or get elected yourself. Plan 'B' - Stop flying like a fool and making stupid claims! Then the rates will come down and we can 'AFFORD' a plan with more options. But that's just my opinion.

For those of us that just want to fly (ie: don't compete and couldn't care about being part of the old boys club at the field) there are less and less reasons to be a member of a field, a club, or MAAC. My foamies and small park flyers see ten times the air time because of the convenience. Now that I know that MAAC doesn't cover me for that, does it really make sense for me to have club dues and MAAC fees for the four days a summer that I get out to fly my big stuff? That's something that I'll have to think about, and I'm sure others are doing the same. Last edited by g.p.; 04-10-2009 at 07:47 AM. |
