Two gliders fly high with birds in florida

Had a great flight today that I just have to tell my fellow glider pilots about.

Threw my 3m super sport glider in the luggage to fly here in florida. My batteries have not arrived yet but a guy at the field told me to use his.

He launched his 4 m composite glider and I launched the 3 meter.

launched for 24 seconds and gained 600 feet. Searched around and found a great thermal. Started rising nicely. Told my new buddy mark to fly over and join me. A huge group of white birds joined us at about 900 - 1000 feet. The flock of birds circled above and bellow me and mark. I would estimate the white flock was 300 feet above and bellow me.
Our two gliders just kept circling and disappearing behind the birds and would appear again. Mark got a little excited at one point and all of a sudden his red glider come flying out of the flock like a burning chicken. I think it came out upside down and he pulled the wrong way and lost about 400 feet on the manuver.
I climbed to 1700 feet before I left the thermal and started looking for sink.

We got 28 minutes out of this flight. When we landed he said that was the best flight he ever had. I would have to agree best thermal flight ever.

For a while the whole club seamed to stop and watch the gliders circle with this huge flock of birds. Probably about 300 birds or more.

Sounds like an awesome day and I am glad somebody is out there chasing thermals. I wore thermal underwear the other day....does that count.

Remember how many guys stopped to check out the glider hardware at Bawlf that windy day. Its got an allure that many never even considered until somebody shows them what they are missing.

It's a peaceful, relaxing way to enjoy model flight that doesn't have to break the bank. I enjoy every outing!

Ahh yes, soaring. Sitting in a lawn chair, leaned back staring at the sky, and enjoying a quiet and peaceful flight! I sure am glad to be back in central Alberta where we actually get some good soaring conditions. Managed to break a personal record this spring myself

Congrats on what sounds like an awesome flight.

My current glider.........(not a very good picture, it's a cropped in shot from my phone)

My glider is a scratch built, fairly extensively modified Sagitta 900 from RCM plans. I extended the wing from 99" to 111", changed the airfoil from the Eppler 205 to a Selig 3021 (better low speed lift and less drag). I didn't put spoilers in the wing, I put flaps on it instead. They didn't work out quite like I wanted them to, mainly do to an experiment I tried. However, they still make quite a difference when fighting at low altitude in light choppy lift.

The fuselage has a few structural mods as well, mainly in the wing attachment area. The wing roots were a known weak spot on the original Sagitta, so mine has a bit different setup, which required the changes to the fuse.

Make sure you post pictures of your Pulsar when its ready to go!

Re: Two gliders fly high with birds in florida

The second best thing about soaring is that it bothers no one. I don't need to tell you what the best thing about soaring is. I love it!!
I have a Radian, 3m Condor Magic and soon to be airborn Eflite Mistique.
The fleet of oldtimers I own also thermal with the best of them, especially my 80'' electric Playboy. At 2lbs 4oz it is insane.
