balsa hardness?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
The plans I am using call for medium balsa with hard balsa in certain areas.
I am assuming that the hard balsa is more dense. If this is true I can use my scale to sort the balsa I picked up at the LHS.
They don't have it labeled this way.
Does anyone have a listing of balsa density compared to hardness?

Thanks
Rob

Re: balsa hardness?

Check out the following link to the SIG website, should have everything you need. Click on information and videos on the top banner, select "facts about balsa wood" on the right and then "selecting balsa for model building". 6 to 8 pounds per cubic foot is light, 10 to 12 Medium, 14 to 16 heavy.

I'm building a discus launch glider. The Quickflic II. The plans are available on-line. I have always been interested in gliders. I thought this would be a good way to start. It doesn't require any equipment for launching.

Have you got any projects on the go this winter?

Nothing much other than trying to repair the stuff I busted. We got to get together some time to swap lies and have coffee or something. I'm currently on my way to Florida, be back around the 1st of Feb.

Re: balsa hardness?

I hope things warm up a bit down there before you leave. I heard on the news they got more snow in Pensacola today.
Have a great time!
