Can a CD rom motor really be used in a small electric plane??

I have to say, I was surprised at the field the other day when I commented about the need for high-end motors for good performance on an electric. Our club's resident "electric guru" (aka adaptabl on RCC)informed me that the plane he was flying had a $30 cdrom motor in it. So yes, you certainly can use a cdrom motor to fly a small foamy!

Not just small foamies the custom cdroms are putting out some good numbers. I have a double stator cdrom motor and i am flying a Charger rc plane with it and it is awsome. It will swing a 11X4.7 apc slowfly prop drawing 15 amps at WOT.

The stock CD rom motors don't have a lot of poop but modified with fewer windings and better magnets they do perform. Go to gobrushless.com for more insight into it. I've built half a dozen of theirs and they all worked well till I overpropped them. They don't cost much so you can abuse them a bit. I still have a couple of kits.

so removed the motor from my old cd rom and i don't see the 3 wires to attach it to my brushless esc?? One more thing too. I was at a car parts place and they have these little cooling fans that have brushless motors in them. There like $3 each. I bought one. They only have 2 wires coming out of them a black negative one and a red ppostaiveone. I hooked the motor directly to a 7.4V battery pack and it does spin but its got like zero torque and the rpms are very low too. Could these be modified to work at a much higher rpm and more torque and if they are can I use it with a standard brushed motor esc?? I don't know I figured for $3 its worth a shot. Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated. The place I got it at is called princes auto.

I just had a look at one and the three wires are soldered to the PCB on the back. They're very fine and hard to see with my tired eyes.

CDROM Motors

Hi,

You will have to re-wire a cdrom motor in order for it to be effective for RC.

There are many sites that explain step-by-step how to do this. I just did a quick search and came up with this one for starters.
www.gobrushless.com

Go to the right side of the page and select "Tutor" and it will show you how they are wound. Take a look at all the other locations at the site, they have good information, but it can be hard to find.

Hope this helps.

Fly4Fun,

The number of statorslots has to be a multiple of 3 (6,9,12,15 ...). PC fan motors are useless.
