Where would you go? WHat companies are making kits, or producing better quality ARF's?

Depending on how things go, I'd like to look into getting something for Sportsman and potentially Intermediate "fun" IMAC again.

Looking for something similar to the 1/3 scale Extra I had, or something in the 80cc to 120cc range.

I feel so far out of the loop I dont know where to start.

Re: So if one were looking for a present day IMAC plane...

There are a ton of great options. The Extreme Flight/3D Hobby Shop ARFs are among my favourites and can be had from Pro-RC or GreatHobbies in Canada. For IMAC I'd take a close look at the AJ Laser 230z...can be had from Pro-RC or pick up in Michigan.

I'm sure you would do just fine with Pilot RC, Hangar 9, etc. I believe AMR still has Aeroworks stock as well. There are also a pile of other Chinese brands like Aeroplus, Peak Model, Flight Model, Aerobeez etc. that get mixed reviews.

If you'd prefer to build, JTec Radiowave is making kits in that size range. You might find some un-built Cardens floating around in classifieds. I'm an ARF guy myself, but one of these well built kits is likely to survive far more flights than most ARFs. Not an IMAC expert, but if you are looking for something more specific to that purpose you might be better off with a kit...most of the ARFs have a slant towards 3D so that they can do everything.

As far as engines go, I think the DA120 and GP123 are the engines of choice for 35% airframes currently. I've seen a few DLE120s that ran very well and pulled hard. There are always 3W and ZDZ if you want something with a Euro flavour. If budget is number one look at the EME120 and BE124, maybe even the RCGF offerings. Of course they all have their own nuances...for support DA is probably the best, although Pro-RC is great at backing the GPs. If you're on the smaller/lighter side and not flying 3D the DA100 is a nice and smooth running engine.

You won't find all of these items in Canada, but we have some good retailers, I get most everything from either Pro-RC, ThunderboltRC or GreatHobbies. AMR is also good for airframes.

I know this post isn't very definitive, but if you've been away for a while this will give you some things to look at!

Cheers!

Edit: Forgot, for an IMAC ARF take a look at Performance Aircraft Unlimited (PAU) as well...you'd have to have it shipped to a US address but they make some very nice airframes as well.

Re: So if one were looking for a present day IMAC plane...

Thanks for that lengthy response. I appreciate the time taken! It will give me a good start to begin exploring..

I like kit building but an ARF is probably more realistic for the foreseeable future with young kids and not much time.

I wish I could go to Toledo. Used to go every year for quite a while. Havent been in several. Too far for a quick trip.

Re: So if one were looking for a present day IMAC plane...

Welcome back Andrew! I've just started flying a 2.8 metre MX2 kitted by JTec Radiowave. Easy build and a top quality kit. I've got an EME120 on tuned pipes and it is really nice. Flies more like a 40%. My friend built the green plane as his first real kit build and it flies nice on a clapped out DA 100 that I sold him Was out today for the first flights of the year. If you want to see how they go together I have a build thread over in the Giant Scale section.
