It's a pretty cool feeling to talk to someone and really watch them gain interest as they go. The biggest thing i'm finding is tht people are quite surprised on the initial cost to get going. Most think it is about double of what it actually is. I guess it could be double if you don't have anyone to ask questions about what is really needed and where to get it.

just curious, what do you tell folks when they ask "How much does it cost?"

I am always at a loss for words when someone asks and I tend to go on about the cost of planes, engines, radios etc and all the variables, then I usually end up telling them it can cost as much or as little as they want to spend.

what is the best way to inform folks of the costs?

Me, i just tell them for starters they can get going for under $350.00, if the want to start in glow. If it is parkflyers then less than $200.00. I do explain that if they want to get everything they need to fly on their own then it's more around $500.00 but you don't really need all that stuff off the start. for local people i offer to let them try out my G3 and see what they think.

Like you said it can be as much or as little as they like.

In the twenty-plus yars in the hobby, I 'm not far off the mark when I say "a new set of clubs or a season pass at the local ski resort."

I also add the caveat that this is starting new, but there is lots of used equipment around if you want to go that route but you have to be careful not to get gyped.

The new ARF (all in one) packaging is a god-send though moving the equipment to another plane can be problematic depending upon the radio setup.
