Why Attend a Zone FunFly?

I had the pleasure of attending The Zone Fun Fly in Arnprior the other day and I had a Blast!

My thanks and appreciation to the guys up there for putting on a Great Event!

However; not everyone attends such events –which is sad.

One chap I know cannot understand Why I would want to go and spend ‘All that money – just to Fly. When you can fly at home for free!’ (he sounds like my mother)

So I decided to try and explain it…

Mainly it is the people.

You get to make new friends and meet old friends – play a lot of ‘Remember When’ as well as ‘Look what I did!’

You also get to meet some of the folks that you have only heard about Online. – that can be really interesting…

Then there is the flying – it is a lot of fun to see the different styles of flying that some guys do. You can pick up lots of different ideas for your own education, not everyone flies the same type of planes as you do and this can be a great time to look at the planes that you have only seen in a magazine or online.

PLUS there is the TYPE of flying – my goodness some of these guys are CRAZY! And they are willing to show you how to do their style of flying… Or you can just sit back and watch the show!

In addition to this you get to see how different people work on their planes or solve age old problems…

-My favorite tidbit of information from this year was how to charge a pneumatic retract system. Instead of an expensive electric compressor that was bulky and needed a big battery – the chap used a Bicycle Tire Pump from the CTC. Works well, cost little and is good for the kids soccer ball too!

-I also saw a trailer that was built on the same concept as mine… It turned out that this fellow saw my trailer and improved upon the idea for his situation. I was both impressed with his creation and proud that I could inspire someone in such a fashion!

Then there was the food!
WOW! These guys have a reputation for making the greatest Deep Fried Turkey EVER! They never fail to impress! No one went away hungry and everyone had a good time!

So YES; it was worth the drive, the time and the money.

I am looking forward to my NEXT event in Kingston and I am making plans to go back to Arnprior in 2017!

I hope to see you there!

Re: Why Attend?

Know exactly what you mean. Had a friend that I begged ,threatened and cajoled to head out to a spring fun fly about 2 hour drive from here that I have been attending for the last 5 years. Even though the weather was the shits for the first time since I have been attending ; I asked him ,after it was all over, did he have a good time and the reply was " absolutely !"...... Second question will you go next year and it didn't take a second for him to say ,YES . There is so much , we can learn from members of other clubs as per what the OP says.

Re: Why Attend?

The introvert in me always thinks the idea of going to a completely strange field and talking with (let alone flying with) complete strangers to be a non-starter.

The wiser part of me has pushed me enough times in the past to know that once that initial hurdle of nervousness is gone I can relax and DO enjoy my time at other clubs and events. It is worth the effort in the end.

It isn't easy, and it takes effort, but I totally agree with you guys that it is worth it.

Cheers,
J

Re: Why Attend?

I agree with you guys. We have our Zone Fun Fly coming up August 12 to 14. Jay, you can fly with me buddy I'll be your spotter. Kidding Jay, as I know you have gone to some big events in the US so you're not shy.
Flying at a new field for some is down right scary. Nice thing about a zone fun fly is you always meet someone you know, which helps to calm the jitters. I like seeing all different types of planes flying. I am bringing my trainer and hope to make a few hot laps with others. Would be cool if someone brings gliders and a tug to show us how to really fly!

Thanks Frank, yes, I've become accustomed to boldly going where no introvert would go before, but the same feelings still exist - just suppressed .

I am hoping to get out to Goderich with my girls for at least the Saturday session. Probably all I will be able to bring _is_ gliders, though I only have one that even comes close to being tow-worthy. And that one I will need to jury rig a tow release to. I'm happy to give that a shot if someone can say for sure they'll be bringing a tug with them???

Cheers,
J

Re: Why Attend a Zone FunFly?

I did attend the G Zone fun fly with my camper.

20$ Registration.
Two night camping.
Plenty of door prize.
Plus a lot of fun and meet new and old friend.
That is a terrific deal!

Last year I was in Timmins at the same time Northern Ontario had their Zone Fun Fly.
I was welcome like somebody of the family.
So don't be shy.
Attend some fun fly you will not regret it.

See you in Kingston...
