Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
Well, after a successfull re-maiden of my CG Super Chipmunk, I have to say that I am impressed. What a performer. I originally had an OS 46 in it but felt it lacked power. I switched to an OS 91 four stroker and WOW!! What a nice difference. Pull through the air very nicely. Performs well from idle to wot. Definetly my new favourite flier
I considered adding flaps but decided I prefer having the extra aileron control surface. Next up is to dial in some differential. Hopefully, there will be no rain tomorrow. Anyone else flying one? Thoughts? Thanks for looking,

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
Nice covering job there.
I still have that kit stored away, possibly on the list to get built next winter. Also have a supercharged YS91, but wondering if that may be a bit much for it.

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
I think you would be quite happy with your, once built. I think you are right in that the supercharged 91 would be overkill. I'd save that for a bird that needs the extra oomph
The straight 91 fourstroke seems to be the best solution.

In the days before ARF's, your plane was what you built. The beauty of SIG and Carl Goldberg kits was that no matter what your building skill, you always got a great flying plane. For something aerobatic, the Superchipmunk was no exception. It was a good choice for someone who wanted to get into aerobatic flying and still have docile take-off and landings. I always thought the minimum power for that should be a 60 2 cycle. I cant imagine how it would fly with a 46- it must have been marginal to say the least. Presently my bird has a Saito 80 in it. I would prefer an OS 91 four stroke myself. I have had my SC for many years and it has never let me down. Mine has flaps installed, which adds to the performance. Elevator/flap mixing is always fun!! Enjoy your bird. To me you have the right plane/power combination! |

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
Hey Max,
Thanks for your input. With the 46 it was waaaay underpowered. I considered putting a Saito 72 i have on the shelf in it but the OS 91 presented itself as the more logical choice. Your 80 should be just fine, i would think. You nailed it with your statement on docile take-off and landings. That is one of its best features. Low speed handling is another plus. I can just putter along low and slow or kick it up and zoom by I might just pick-up another one this fall as a backup. It would be great if Great Planes would re-introduce it as an ARF. That would introduce alot of new pilots (non-builders) to this little gem. Thanks agian. Now if only the wind would settle down for a day or so

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
Hi Norm,
I can't take credit for the original build but am quite pleased with the results of the original builder and myself. You gotta get yours out and fly her!!! I am quite confident that you will be very pleased. Keep me posted on how the 61FX makes it perform Cheers,

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
I've had 3 of those... all of them were the World Models ARF which is an exact copy... first one i had a .61 OS in it... flew just fine... second had a 91 os 4stroke.... great flier... still regret selling it... i have one ready to maiden now with a 75AX in it..... I would have put another 91 4stroke in but found this engine on RCC new and real cheap so i thought i'd give it a try... first one i crashed... second one i sold (stupid.. stupid..stupid!!!) and this one will only go away if its in to many pieces to repair!!!

Re: Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk
I have the Great Planes ARF, OS108 in it and it flys great, but it's no Sukhoi or Yak, likes to get into tip stalls when you get behind it, but easy to recover.
