I'm taking the family to Atlanta this morning for the weekend... the boys really want to go to the massive Georgia Aquarium, so we're flying out of Buffalo this morning and will be back Monday early afternoon!!!

When we get back, I've got about 2 more hours to go on the coring before I start preparing the wing sheeting :

The goal is to have all the sheeting sanded and the layup's underway by Wednesday

T
They sure look cool, too bad they have to be sheeted over.

Have fun on your family trip!!!

Jack,
I'm sure Trevor could come up with some thin, light weight, clear polycarbonate material.

LOL!!!!

What a great idea!!!!!

Actually, I've been talking to Dennis at Carden and a good friend in Montreal about two alternatives to sheeting cores besides 1/16" balsa!!!!

I start testing on the two methods in a couple weeks!!!

I'm stoked about it!! - there may be a way to save another pound on a build!!!!

Should I share the ideas now or save them until one of my personal builds

Re: BBT/WINGBURNER --> 4 REDHEADS and a CARDEN

Well, here's the idea that I floated by Dennis at Carden...

The wing cross-section is really just a composite I-Beam.... The cores provide some resistance against shear (minimal for a wing) but also separate the balsa skins that see tension forces... The further the skins are separated from one another (ie: the thicker the wing) the less tensile forces in the sheeting).

So if the 1/16" sheeting is only put in tension, why not use 1/32" sheeting???? There should be ample strength (try taking a plank of 1/32" sheeting and break it by pulling on it by each end)

The trick gets to be ensuring all the planks could be sanded smooth without sanding them too thin (ie: 1/64").... But I'm sure there's a solution here!!!! Going to 1/32"' would take nearly 8oz off each wing!!!!!

The other option gets to be glassing a thin layer of CF on each side of the foam. In my University days, I did a lot of research with CF Prepeg... Perhaps an idea, but expensive and the wings would need painting!!!

I'm first going to pursue the 1/32" sheeting idea and will do a number of testings!!!

That sounds really cool. But how would the wingtubes hold up ? would they have to be lengthend to help spread some load ?
The Carden wing tube doesn't go that far into a the wing panel. And some of those guys that like to a downline wall have had the tube socket rip from the wing panel.
Would going to thinner sheeting make that area of the wing a little weaker to that type of force applied ?
