Looking at getting a new trainer ARF and I am interested in the Hanger 9 Alpha 40 or the Sig Kadet. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advanced!

Re: Trainer Suggestions

If you can get an LT40 ARF, go for it.

But I have also instructed students on the Alpha 40 and I was very impressed with its performance and durability.

In my book, the preferred order for ARF trainers is:

Kadet LT40
Alpha40
Nexstar

Re: Trainer Suggestions

I used the Goldberg Eagle II and still fly that plane off water, it is my favorite. I have seen the Kadet LT40 fly and also the Alpha. They are both good airplanes, but if it was myself I would go with the Kadet out of those two.

Re: Trainer Suggestions

+1 for the LT-40. Mind you, it's what I learned on so I am prejudiced. I also taught a young lad on a Nexstar. We found we had to get rid of that goofy sensor that is supposed to help keep it flying right as it didn't work well and was more trouble than help. Otherwise, it's a good enough plane as well.

Alberta Re: Trainer Suggestions

+1 on the SIG LT40 Kadet!!

I did most of my training on a PT40 with a SuperTiger .45 in it which was a solid combo, but after it met an untimely end I purchased a LT40 arf and have been very impressed with it. It had an OS .46FX in it to begin with and "performance" ( hey, it is a trainer) was okay but here in Calgary at ~ 3450 asl it seemed it could use more jam to recover from bad attitudes!

Now I have a Magnum .61 in it and really like & prefer the flying characteristics of this combo as a trainer, at less than half throttle it flies really well and on the buddy box I can override it with authority to get out of any trouble my students might get into! I am sure at lower altitudes the OS .46 AX would be just fine.

I did dress the LT up a bit with black trim on the leading edges of the wings and belly, I also added some high vis orange & balck wing stripes under one wing tip as it was basically all white and disappeared easily on cloudy days. Many new pilots in my club have learned on the Hobbico Nexstar and it appears to be a good plane as well.

I cannot comment on the H9 Alpha and how it flies, but have read many good things about it as well, the LT is a fair bit larger which can be helpful.

Re: Trainer Suggestions

The Alpha 40 is what I used and it was a great Trainer, It came BNF........... But,
I would chage the links that come wioth it including the Nose Gear stearing horn as it breaks very easy.
Other than that it is very stable.
I borrowed an LT once and it was even better. As mentioned before the LT is even better to fly.
If I were to do it again I would go with the LT 40.
