I started flying last april on the Hanger 9 PTS(progressive training system) mustang. You can get the ARF and put an OS.46 or a OS.55 like I did, and it will really move out. You must aslo have your own radio for the ARF version, so you can get that 9chnl that LGM mentioned.

In May I recieved my wings and I bought an A-10 EDF(GARBAGE!) my 3rd plane was the RAFALE i mentioned. Its a very stable plane but non of this would have been possible if i didnt learn to fly on a nitro plane first. The Beuty of the Mustang is that once you become confident. You remove more of the parts designed to slow you down. I get the impression that you like speed as I do. Once you remove all that stuff you will have a plane that is capable of speeds over 100mph in a dive. I still have the Mustang and fly it as much as possible because it is still a fun plane to fly. The trouble with the slower trainers is that you have to sell it and buy another. why not just keep one good one.

This is the RTF(ready to fly) version. much more expensive, i think the ARF version is about $200 but then you have to add your engine, and servos

I noticed that you live in the toronto area. Check out the AuroraModelAircraftClub. Its were I fly and there are many instructors to help and we have indoor flying! somthing else you might want to look into first before heading out to the feild.

Re: New To The Board..Few Jet Q's

Yup...these guys know what they're talking about. I have been flying for 15 years and I speak from experience when I say that. If you take their advice, you'll have a very rewarding experience. If you decide to go another route, good luck. I worked at a hobby shop and if I had a dollar for every time I heard of a customer who bought a trainer and wrote it off becuase they didn't seek the help of an instructor or a club, i'd be a millionaire.

A good .40 size trainer with a new OS 46 and a JR or Futaba 2.4 radio is just about as good as it gets. After you master your trainer, their's tons and tons of good intermediate planes out there (Midstar 40, 4 star 40, ultra stick, etc). Once you master the intermediate plane, I would recommend having a look at a .40 size prop jet like the Sig Kougar or Juno F-20. I had a Juno F-20 and it flew really well and it was very predictable (i'm going to build another one this winter). Throw the os46 and radio gear into your prop jet and you'll have a 100+mph plane that will give you an idea of what it's like flying a larger, more powerful ducted fan or turbine.

I would also highly recommend checking out the local indoor flying scene. Flying indoors is ALOT of fun no matter if your an expert or a novice. I fly 40% and nitro heli's mainly in the summer but during the winter, I have just as much fun with my 200$ piece of foam as I do with a 6000$ aerobatic plane. Something like this would be a fantastic beginner indoor plane: http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=PKZ3300

Pretty much everybody will give you slightly different advice but it'll all be variations on the same theme: buy the appropriate gear at the appropriate time and find a good instructor. Once you have decided on what type of plane you want, I'm sure we can give you the specifics....i.e. what radio to guy, what engine to buy, etc.

Hey Trevor,
Here are some prices for your:

Sig Kadet LT40 (kit) $137.00 (Consider an extra $100 for covering, hardware, glue, and a covering iron)
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=SIGRC67

Sig Kadet LT40 (ARF) $164.00 (the arf is cheaper in the end, but as I said, I do recommend building a kit)
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti..._id=SIGRC67ARF

OS 46LA engine: good power for your trainer, but not a super powerful engine $100.00
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...od_id=OSM46LAN

OS 46AX: better engine with more power, but a bit more money at $163.00
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=OSM46AX

Radio system: This one has huge variants. If you want the basic radio for a trainer, you can find a non computer 4 channel radio for around $125.
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=SPM5500
If you want something you can grow with consider something like the following:

http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=SPM6600
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=SPM2710

If you want to get something that will work for most jets in the future consider something like this:
http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...rod_id=JRP2910

You'll probably need another $100 - $150 for assorted items like a ni starter, maybe an electric starter for starting the engine, some basic tools (you probably already have most of them though) fuel, a small flight box etc.

For all that stuff you're probably looking at around $700 with a cheaper radio.

There are other Trainers out there that you can buy RTF for less, but the best advice I can give you is, buy the best equipment you can afford, it will be cheaper in the long run when you want to move up, and if in the event you decide it's not for you, the good equipment will have a better resale than the cheaper stuff.

Hope that helps
Jeremy

Re: New To The Board..Few Jet Q's

Now, if you don't want to start off with a glow/nitro powered plane, you can get successfully started with a Hobby Zone Supercub. It is an all foam plane, and everything you need is in the box. Try it, see if you like it, then proceed from there.

The most important thing is that this is a hobby...enjoy the journey...there is no race to any destination
