I tried that prop on my .72 Irvine in my Tango last year and it was just to much prop for that plane and motor. I am not quite sure the .55AX could handle that much prop anyway.
Give that 12.25x3.75 APC a try..... it sure works good on mine!

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

A 12-7 is to big and is probably why the engine is getting hot. Try for 12000 rpm or so.

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

Just finished my mojo end of last season and had a few test flights. I found the 13X4 apc gave the best 3D performance. The 13X4W took too long to spool up. The 13X 4 has no hesitation. Mind you my 55ax only has about 6 tanks through it ant the Mojo weighs 4lbs 4 ozs.

A .72 Irvine? what can I say and stay out of trouble? I used that prop on an OS .70 4 stroke in a U-Can-Do 46, as good as it gets.

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

I use a 55 ax with a 12x 4 to hover my FUN50 and it works great. That plane you have is not for hovers anyway . Get a 3d plane and have fun it will hover with that setup all day.

What's the matter Ed, you don't like Irvines????
The Q72 that I have is a fantastic running motor, it has lower rpms and will pull stumps.
With the 14x4 on it (that you recomended to me to try last year) it handled the prop just fine, but when combined on a smaller overpowered airframe like the Tango and Q72 combo, the Tango would twist violently when throttle was applied. The prop just had to much bite for that airframe.
The 14x4 is a fine prop on larger airframes and for higher tourque motors like the Q72 and the 4 strokes, but on a .55AX were rpms are a must it would not be a good choice in my opinion.
But hey.... to each their own!! Try it, you just may like it!!

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

Good Discussion, lots of opinion and experience being communicated here.

What I take away from the meat of it all, is that I will try to increase overall RPM while striving for a target speed of about 12,500 and test the results.

I realize the Escapade is not a 3D plane by any means, and a hover for this 5.5 lb plane is not natural for a low wing with limited control surface area airframe designed for sport flying.

But it sure is fun pulling it off.... It can be a struggle at times.

So, in the interest of having a good weekend of flying for fun, to unwind from the drab of the day job. I appreciate all the input and will simply try new things till it feels right for me. It’s nice to know my attempt should not adversely affect this engine, and is why I asked, since the Escapade is my first Nitro Plane ever. And I had someone else build it for me due to lack of time and a persistent desire for fixed wing flight.

Kind of backwards really. I got the plane, flew with instructor, got the wings, and after all that. Now.. I try to figure out what makes it go... lol

Thanks everyone...

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

12X6 APC is what I fly on my Pheonix Models Yak with a 55ax. Pulls it around really good but I don't do 3D. One fellow in my club suggested removing the cone from inside the muffler to give it more umph. I'm going to try it this summer to see if it makes much difference. Try the 12X6 they'er only a couple bucks.

Re: OS .55 AX & Prop Size

A bit off the subject but something I find a little confusing. I converted the UCD to electric. Now, instead of using a 14 x 4 prop I am using a 17 x 10!! The airplane flies the same, just silently.
