I had to pay $9 to ship a clutch puller ( basically a 10" long x 3/4" bolt) back to Saskatoon (3 hrs away from me) took 4 days to get there. It only cost me $11 to ship a 26oz bottle of Rum to a buddy in Idaho USA. They could have a option like USPS had. 4 pounds or under for a small package was around $5 to Canada, not sure if USPS still has that option or not.

Canada Post has a sign hanging at all there outlets . It's spelled like this

BOHICA === Bend Over Here It Comes Again.

The funny part is that it is illegal to ship alcohol though Canada Post.

The last ten postage increases have been made to reflect additional storage charges.

When ever I send anything or get it sent to me from the states, I always get is labeled as something else. I found that if it was labeled correctly it went missing. Most things I get labeled as used snowmobile parts. Usps tells it's customers if they are sending gun parts to not label it as gun parts for fear of it getting into the wrong hands even though it is supposed to be labeled correctly for insurance purposes.

Process faster and they don't need to store it. Sounds simple.

Re: Canada Post

>-->give it to the clerk, they put the postage on and you don't touch it again-->no tax. You only get charged the postage amount with no HST/GST.

Only if the postage fee if $5.00 or more. But, remember it is the TOTAL postage fee for items going out of the country .... so several letters, etc. will qualify for taxes not being charged. I find that especially handy when sending out about a hundred Xmas cards! As above, the clerk officially has to attach the postage; if she/he hands you the stamps tax is chargeable. In practice they have better things to do at busy times and if you're familiar to them, they'll let you stick on the stamps there at the counter.

By and large clerks will not advise the customers about the 'no tax on $5 or over' so the info is worth passing around to family and friends. I have fun telling the lineup with Xmas cards! As far as packages are concerned I believe the software now automatically discounts the tax when the details are typed in .. but I wouldn't rely upon it. Check the receipt, if taxes chargeds then request a refund even if only a small amount.

"By and large clerks will not advise the customers about the 'no tax on $5 or over' so the info is worth passing around to family and friends."

There is the problem. Some of the long time employees know the loop holes and won't say anything. Some will pass on the information because they understand the value of money. I have had parcels shipped from the states for a lesser value then quoted on USPS site and nowwhere on USPS site can you find a shipping cost that matches. If it is under 4 pounds it can usually go ail letter post and actually be a package. I bought a gear and timing chain set that was shipped that way. Send it as a parcel and it would have been triple the price.

There is ways to work the system , just finding the clerk that knows and willing to do it is another story.

Companies get big shipping breaks and the individual gets it hard. Just like income tax.
