Post those pics of your pre 1965 Vintage planes

I see many of these threads in the different forums but none here.
The cutoff date I used is the same as at the Cocklebarrow Vintage Rally so we have a certain time frame of planes to aim for.
So post your vintage planes here.
If possible add the name, year produced, wingspan and anything of interest about it like the power system.
Please remember to only post model planes that have been released as a plan or kit before December 1965.

Re: Post those pics of your pre 1965 Vintage planes

To start this thread. Here is my Stardust Special 300.
It has a 50"ws and I converted it from a Cox .49 to a small 2s lipo and electric outrunner motor.
It was released in 1940.
It is a excellent flyer and would recommend it to build.

Feather Merchant

Here is my Spirit of Yesteryear -- Feather Merchant that I found at the London Swap Meet. It was only the airframe and I did a quick electronics install to try it out before winter set in. Over the winter I hope to do a more thorough reconstruct to fix some items.

The SOY site mentions a release date of 1939.

It is a 72"ws and the airframe is very light. I only added 1 lb of weight after installing the electronics. My overall weight came out to 37ozs which is less that the advertised weight of the Merchant on the SOY website. I shaved 5ozs off. Turns out my wing loading is only 8.2 oz. per. sq. ft. I wanted to try something different with the power system. I wanted to throw a big prop on 3 cells at low amps. Luck would have it, I had the correct motor on hand. I am able to spin the 13x4 apce prop at 21 amps with a 3s 2200mah lipo. With the weight of the plane I am easily over 100watts per lb.

It is a standard high wing cabin model but the wing tips and curves on the stab and fin are made out of reed (looks like bamboo to me) which blends into the balsa.

You have some very pretty oldies there Eric. That Pee Wee Speedster looks really sharp. I really like the looks of the little pilot in the cockpit! Sets the plane off.
My 72" Merchant is a recent purchase. I didn't realize SOY also had a smaller 50" version available at one time.

Thanks for posting!

Chris

Re: Post those pics of your pre 1965 Vintage planes

This is my Jetco Navigator. I don't know the exact date but it was kitted in the 1950's as a free flight or single chanel escapement. When I first got it, it had changed hands several times and never flew. The person I aquired it from only knew that his brother had been gifted it some time in the 70's.

I got it as a "rescue" and rebuilt much of it.

52" wingspan
Park480 and 9 x 7.5E with 3S 3200.

I have the sponsons finished now and would like to try it in the water someday. Have only flown it wheel version so far.

Some details down a little ways in the thread.
