Re: Now that's what I'm talkin about! 20,000LB Capacity!
There's nothing special here. I flew one of those before (on Phoenix Flight simulator)...
I wish we could simulate lifting weights. Try to spook down and stabilize the heli over those people. They sure trusted the pilot in the video...

Re: Now that's what I'm talkin about! 20,000LB Capacity!
gi1mo2, there IS something special when the machine is purpose-built and it excels at that task.
Some facts my instructor passed on: These are long out of production and spares are finite. There is also NOTHING domestically available that can match it in capability. Every hour of use brings them and any components closer to time out and since these are no speed demons, if the job is deemed too far away it is more cost effective to dismantle the heli, transport it to the jobsite, reassemble it and go through the inevitable tests and tweaks. At task completion then repeat the process to return or proceed to the next location. In some cases there have been mods made for the main pilot to do lifts from the command seat, but for critical work the original design had a lift pilot fly from a seat facing aft looking out from a door in the rear center of the cabin. This had a full size bubble window to give an excellent view of the entire lift mechanism and down along the line with readouts indicating machine loads. The lift pilot had a set of controls with a 1:3 reduction so was able to make very fine adjustments to position yet could be overridden by the command pilot if necessary.

I guess that were working on a mountain where the small road to access was not possible by trucks. They must have been working on something really worth the money because none of that equipment or people that operate them are cheap. You'd think there was something wrong with priorities sometimes.

It looks like a fire fighting base to me. Very remote!

Imagine what that sucker is worth an hour. Must be important to move equipment to pay that bill.
Cool video, thanks. Daren

I marshaled one of these on the ramp at YXD once in the mid 90's. It's something you never forget...awesome!

Re: Now that's what I'm talkin about! 20,000LB Capacity!
Apparently they are not in production anymore. A company called Erickson has the rights to them now. Was talking to the heli mechanic at work. He was saying if you fly for 2 to 3 hrs you would have to land it and give a complete inspection and equipent check usually involving minor repairs.
Reminds me of my B400! lol I also read somewhere that in most cases it is cheaper to dismantle the sikorsky and transport it to its next job and reassemble it! What a workhorse!

Re: Now that's what I'm talkin about! 20,000LB Capacity!
Craneman, that confirms what I mentioned about the transport option a few posts back.
