End caps and root caps turned out great. I used Probond on them. I also got the little "L" brackets installed on the ply blocks in the stabs.

I got all set-up to do the incidence and noticed that my battery in my new H9 Pro Incidence Meter was dead and it's a special little 6V battery. I just put an order into Great Hobbies, but now incidence will have to wait for a week!

Onto the rudder then....

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

The sheeted rudder was trimmed tonight and I got a bunch of the 3/8" balsa edging ready. In some cases (TE of rudder and hinge line), it is 2 peices of 3/8" to get a 3/4" cap. Lots of sanding for tomorrow.

I also got the 1/4" cross grain balsa glued on the tail for the vertical stab. Once the vertical stab is shaped (tomorrow), I'll line things up and glue it onto the fuse.

I'm done for the night! Time to do a little simulator work!

Cheers

Very nice work! It's really looking great!

Lol. I spent 3 hours on the sim tonight, all on the same maneuver! Good thing is, said maneuver is starting to look like it should, and I'm learning how to save it in the event of a "dumb thumb" move, so when the time comes to do it with a plane like you're building, I might not destroy it!

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Another productive night on the Carden build.

I got the edging done on the rudder and everything is shaped, including the hinge bevel.

Same goes for the vert stab. I also got the rear fuse fillet done and blended in. On the Carden drawings they give you the template for the cut-out in the rear fillet and it worked perfectly! Just a bit of light filler, a sanding and it was all done.

I still have to bevel the back of the vert stab a bit, but I'll leave that to the final sanding stage.

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

My game plan is to put (1) JR8711 servo in the tail for the rudder with a titanium turnbuckle and 1.5" arm. Nothing beats direct connection and this plane's rudder isn't that big, so the 8711 will be lots of power.

In terms of balance, I've managed to take lots of weight out of the tail, so I'm confident the servo weight will not be a problem.

There's nothing in the plans for a rearward servo bay, so I made one up. The mount added 0.1 oz, but it is very beafy to handle all that torque.

If Yakitiyak is reading this, does the servo look familiar??? Thanks for the sale.

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

I started to work on the hatch also. As per the plans, I skinned the edge of the turtledeck with 1/16 balsa. I'll blend it in tomorrow.

Got the 1/4" balsa edging on the hatch sanded and also blended the hatch into the fuse. The stock joint between the hatch and the fuse was again amazingly close. They were probably only out by 1/32", so a few passes with some 220 grit and they were blended perfectly.

I made up little plywood hold down plates and epoxied them on. I'll drill a hole in the plates and the hatch tomorrow and glue in the alignment/holddown dowels.

I made it as far as the stringers for the hatch and ran out of steam. I'll pick up on things tomorrow evening.

Re: 35% Carden Extra 330S - Build Thread

Not much left to go! Finish rudder, hatch and mount cowl + incidence (stupid battery) & cut out control surfaces.

Jim D... when am I starting your Carden Yak???
