Does anyone know of a firm that could custom mfg a 3 1/2 spinner with the backplate recessed into the spinner.. (reason being that the current backplate is too far forward of the cowl...) Thanks, fellows...

Re: Recessed spinned..

That might be a better question directed at TruTurn with some good drawings with measurements and see what they have to say, as they are THE experts when it comes to designing spinners. They would be able to give you a good explanation and a $ amount for the extra cost. If one of; then it is costly . Somewhere I read they charge a setup fee of $30 or 35 to do a custom CNC back plate machine job... Then there is the spinner cone needing different cutting/machining ; each for a different prop profile.

Maybe get back to us with the results would be great.

Re: Recessed spinned..

Rather than making a spinner that stretches back to the cowl to close the gap, What about just making an extension and attaching (Gluing or bolting) it to the cowl so that it goes FORWARD to the existing spinner?

You can make the extension out of any of the preferred materials that we commonly use in modelling- Wood, balsa, Fiberglass, metal, etc..

Re: Recessed spinned..

I'm trying to imagine it, Len, but I cant figure out the problem as you describe it in my mind's eye.

A picture is worth a thousand.

Richard have you got any pictures you can share with us?

Re: Recessed spinned..

The distance from the front of the cowl is a bit more than I would like...(about 3/8 to 1/2 inch)....I can not move the engine...hence my thought of getting a spinner made that would have the backplate recessed inside the spinner, thereby allowing the rear edge of the spinner to be closer to the cowl. Upon reading the above posts, I am going to manufactre a spacer and attach it to the cowl...thereby eliminating the need for the custom made spinner...It will mean a bit of time and patience on the little machine lathe, but methinks it can be done...with a thanks to Max and all those who replied.....(and I promise to leave the rum spiced eggnog till after I am done at the lathe)..Merry Christmas, fellows...

Re: Recessed spinned..

I have done just that Richard.
at one time I had a biplane with a 100cc engine which stuck out an inch or so. With a little time at the lather I turned out a 7/8 back plate hollowed out in the rear. Worked great as I even machined spokes to lighten the thing.
Unfortunately I gave it away so I can't snap a picture but it looked just like a 4.5" tru-turn back plate with a skirt.

Re: Recessed spinned..

One way to move an engine back is to cut out the part of the fire wall that the engine mount touches. (counter bore the area)
Then glue a new fire wall behind it, if your old fire wall is 1/2" thick your motor is now 1/2" back, it can be shimmed up with washers if you prefer 3/8".

Re: Recessed spinned..

go to the Zinger Propeller website....they've got exactly what you are looking for. I used one on my SeaFury.
