GP Patriot 40 with Webra Speed 40

Hi guys... just picked up a GP Patriot 40 with a Webra Speed 40. The plane has never been flown and the Speed 40 has only been run in with a couple tanks through it. I think the Webra is an older version because it has the slide carb, quite neat actually.

Is this Webra going to have enough grunt to get some good performance out of the Patriot , or should I pull it and put a GMS.61 in? I have 3 spare GMS.61s' on the shelf at the moment

Was thinking about getting a Hanger 9 Jackal till I found this one..... they do look a lot a like!

I think the Webra will give it great performance. You might be able to spin a larger propeller with the .61 but rpm is the key to getting speed not prop size. My guess is that it will be a rocket as is. I've never run a webra speed but it sounds fast

Webra engines are superior to most engines including power. They are excellent running and starting on 5% nitro or FAI fuel. Take the time to brake it in carefully.

Re: GP Patriot 40 with Webra Speed 40

I have had a webra speed 40 and a speed 28. These motors are amazing. the 28 would yank a .40 size plane around like nothing. I used to call it my bumblebee on steroids. That 40 will fly that patriot like nothing.

It was always fun to be "setting" the high speed on the 28, and watch the people who have never seen one spool up start backing away cause they think your going to explode the motor..lol. nothing like a screaming 28 at 22k+rpm to cause people to get worried.

Re: GP Patriot 40 with Webra Speed 40

Yes Curtis
The Webra speed 40 will have plenty of power.
I have seen this same set up used before.
You will see plenty of speed from that patriot.
A GMS 60 would give tons of pulling power but you would suffer in the overall speed.
As others have stated just using 5 % nitro will work great in this engine
Let that engine rev up a little by using a smaller prop.
I have always used a 9.5 x 6 MA prop on these engines with great success.
If you get to much speed causing flutter you can always back off to a regular 10x6 or 10x6N.

The carburetor is a special flow through design for greater performance.
A modified version of this carburetor with no low-end idle adjustment was used for racing at one time.
The adjustment on the carburetor is a little tricky to get use to.
When you adjust the low end or idle mixture it is opposite to what you are use to with barrel carburetors. To lean out the low end you turn the brass wheel out (counter clockwise).
Also you may need to prime/choke it more than a barrel type on initial start.
Spend a little time adjusting that carburetor and you should find that it works great

Re: GP Patriot 40 with Webra Speed 40

I had a patriot, great flying plane. I ran a OS .46AX then replaced it with a OS.55AX and it was way better. People were always amazed how fast it flew. I even put it on floats, one would think weird on floats but it flew great.....Sometimes i miss that plane. Crowd pleaser....

Re: GP Patriot 40 with Webra Speed 40

Could you make a .61 fit? I know i needed tail weight on mine with a .46 and .55. A .61 is abit heavier, but each could plane is diff. Just to let you know though

Thanks for all the replies so far guys, I am taking all info in on this one.

Bill, I am not 100% sure as I havn't weighed it yet, but it feels plenty light, I am guessing all up RTF to be around 5-5.25 lbs! The guy that built it did a great job at keeping the weight down.

The GMS.61 engines are quite "porky", so I may have to rethink engine choice if the Webra is not up to the task. I may just leave the Webra in and try it though, who knows, it may be just fine. If not, I can always swap it out later with something with more gusto.

I would probably have to re-work the whole nose cone to shoehorn a .61 in there. I will only do that as a last resort.

I put a GMS.61 instead of the recommended .46 into my Hanger 9 Raptor F22, it was also a tight fit, but I wedged it in there and wow, what a differant flying airplane now. Balls of fun!!
