Switching from nitro to gas planes

Hello gentlemen.
I have been flying my Nitro GP Easy Sport for a year now and it is great fun. But it is time to try a gas plane. I was wondering what additional field equipment I would need (besides the gas engine of course) for this transition????
Thanks for your feedback in advance.

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

Not much...all you really need is a fuel can, fittings and pump. I use a chicken stick as well, but you might prefer your hand or a starter. I would say a tachometer for tuning is a must but I fly with a few people whom I've never seen use a tach. I tend to check my tune before every flight, not because I adjust the needles every flight but it gives me the peace of mind that it is running well.

I think you'll find gas much easier than glow once you get used to it...you don't need to tune every flight, no charging a glow starter, no buying glow fuel, much quicker clean up, etc.

Have fun!

Will you be converting this plane to Gas or trying it on a different plane?

Field equipment is dependant on size of plane you will be flying. The main differences for plane and field equipment are as follows:

Fuel stopper must be gas rated.

Fuel line must be gas rated.

Ignition must have a secondary means of shut down remotely

I use an electric starter for 20cc and under and a gloved hand for 30cc and larger.

Fuel pump must be gas rated manual or electric.

A measuring device for mixing oil and gas.

No Glow Driver required unless your using a new OS GGT engine.

Forget about degreasing your plane after flying all day. Wipe it down and put it away.

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

Yup - What they said....

Once you get used to Gas you realise that it is just GREAT!
And - you save money on the fuel...
And - there is less mess...

And ... there really isn't that much to be concerned about... it is just flying a model airplane. With a slightly different power source.

Happy Landings!

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

I love my gasser choppers. Go to the field with the heli, my radio, and gas can, that's it.

And IF you fly in the winter, a mild carb tune and never worry about a deadstick....

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

sorry for the late reply - thank you ALL for your great input.
I will be buying a used gas engine plane with a 35 - 50 CC power range
I have the following already
electric starter
chicken stick
Techometer
Fuel pump
complete field box

so it looks like the gas fuel can, fittings and a pump? I have an extra fuel pump that is exactly the same as the pump I use for my nitro. Willl that work on a gas engine???

The bottom line is I guess the gas plane costs more upfront - but the savings in fuel will quickly recover that cost.

Now any one of you fellas have a gas plane you have become bored with and willing to part with for sale????
Thank you again to ALL of you.

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

What type of plane are you looking for? I have a Precedent T240 with a CRRC 26 cc gas engine if that is of interest. If you Google Precedent T240 you will get some pictures of what the plane looks like.

Re: Switching from nitro to gas planes

I wouldn't say that gas planes cost more. I can get an RCGF 20cc gasser from AMR cheaper than any O.S./Saito four-stroke equivilant, or large 2 stroke (new). I've gotten great deals on used gassers, and so far, all have been first rate. Any airplane from .46 glow sized and up can now be powered with a gasser, so there's no difference there. The ease, simplicity and reliability of gassers, not to mention the lack of goop after flying, it's all win-win. My Dynaflite Super Decathlon for example, has a Saito 180, and easily chugged through it's 16 oz tank, required regular tuning, hated cold weather, and I went through tons of shop towels in a season, along with several gallons of Nitro. Now, with a 26cc gasser, turn on the electrics, quick flip, and I get two long flights out of a single tank, and once a month I wipe it down. Local chainsaw shop has top notch oil, neoprene and tygon fuel line, filters, and if I have an issue, they'll even overhaul, at great prices. Hard to beat that!
