Cowl spacing

Does anyone have any idea how close a cowl can be to the engine/muffler etc.
I have a DLE 55 and fiberglass cowl. Now that I have it painted it seems to have shrunk. Go figure. Anyway it is a bit close to the engine. Less than
1/8th inch in a couple spots.
What would be a comfortable proximity before I break out the dremel again.

Thanks in advance

Jason

Re: Cowl spacing

If its heat you are worried about, it should be fine.

Vibrations are another story. It all depends how much the cowl flexes and moves during flight and high G maneuvers.

I would say do a couple of flights and see if any marks appear on the inside from contact.

Re: Cowl spacing

I don't think the cowl spacing is the main issue here. How is the cooling for the motor? Is that cooling air able to come in and get out properly? Likely something is getting hotter than what is supposed to, in there.

If you could attach a picture of your actual setup would be great.

Cheers,

Will

Re: Cowl spacing

Thanks for the replies. Initially I was worried about heat as the clearance seemed to be at least 1/8th inch at the closest. It now seems to be closer so it may be touching in two spots. I think I will have to break out the dremel but thought I would get some opinions before I start grinding. Tragic that I noticed it right after painting. Oh Well.
I will post some pics when I get home tonight.

Lots of air flow I think, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Haven't flown it with the cowl as yet.

Re: Cowl spacing

It seems that the muffler block is touching the cowl or flapping against the cowl under air pressure and/or vibration (I think.

When flying, overtime the muffler block is going to start eating the bottom part of the cowl.

I think you are going to have to cut around it a little bit more. Nice paint job though.

Cheers,

Will

Re: Cowl spacing

Thanks Will, I think so to. I just realized I put the works in the oven after the white went on to force dry it. (impatient) Not that hot but I think that may be why the shape changed very slightly. It had just a enough clearance prior to painting.
I have some paint left over for touch up. And the checkers on the cowl may have to come off alltogether as they turned out to be minor disaster.I am going to try and fix them but it remains to be seen if they can be fixed.
Its my first paint job and went well up to the checkers.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Cowl spacing

I agree with Will.
You have a lot of the bottom cut out. There will be shaking and flexing happening. You will definately get rubbing going on.

Re: Cowl spacing

THanks Brad, I have cut a bit more out.
Thats a cowl as it comes from Carden and then mine.
Hopefully I haven't removed too much material.
I actually beefed up the edges when I originally cut it with light cloth and west system epoxy.
And it looks like the white w/checkers needs to get sanded off and redone. Darn. Was looking forward to flying with the cowl on.
Regards

Jason
