First time with a hawk on PEI, I get eagles and ospreys often.
He showed me 2 thermals, then chased me for 10 minutes.
My glider is a Flyzone Corvalis with my own design wings.
The hawk I snipped from google

Re: spring soaring with red tail hawk

Very nice. Love the wings on your Corvalis, BTW.

We get hawks at our field as well.

I guess they are curious about the "flying bird" they see. I think they think our planes are birds and come over to fly (hunt) with us. I guess they figure if we are circling, we must have some prey in sight and they want to get in on the action.

Re: spring soaring with red tail hawk

I lived in Lahr, German for 4 years, and flew Bergfalke gliders with the Lahr Gliding Club. We did regular jaunts to the Swiss Alps, so amazing flying with the canopy off in the summer, forming up with eagles and falcons, just about reach out and touch them purely magic. Same thrill with R/C, though we've got Ospreys, they're ok with gliders, not so much the powered stuff at the field. They have learned to stay away from jet turbines though! lol

Re: spring soaring with red tail hawk

I couldn't resist cooking up a shot of what it must have looked like from the cockpit of my Corvalis when the hawk made a run at it.

30 ft hawks would be a nightmare for air traffic control !
