New to planes! What should I buy first?
Hey everyone!
I'm usually a multi-rotor guy, but I've always been interested in planes and heli's, and wanted to get into flying those as well. Currently I have a Spektrum DX-6 transmitter and a few quads that I fly, but I'm looking for a good "learner" plane that I can upgrade/update with FPV and such when I get a bit better at flying it, I'm just looking for some expert opinions on what would be best for me, or what worked well for you. I do want to get into flying and building jets and float planes (as I live near a decent sized lake) so anything that may help with my progression to that, please let me know! Thanks everyone! |

Corbin as merv said depends on what you really want. IMHO an easy trainer and parts are still available is the apprentice, it also has a float kit for it and can be modded easy for fpv flight. Your DX6 will fly it no problem.

Completely agree with Mytmerc83. You will be hard pressed to get a better trainer than an Eflite Apprentice. On training nights at our field, you usually find 6 or 8. Fly well, reasonable price for all you get, and easy to repair.

3rd vote for the Apprentice. Nothing better for learning to fly and a great fpv platform as well. The battery compartment can easily take a 3s 5000 mah for longer flight times.

Are you sold on electric only?
I learned the old school way, on a scratch built trainer called a Coin-foo with a Cox .049 engine!  Later on I trained people on .40 sized Eagle II's....a lot of them. They are great learning planes. They are a balsa kit that you have to build. I know everyone is in "electric mode" these days, but there is something very rewarding with good old glow powered models. Same for building an actual balsa kit...there is a sense of pride seeing your hard work pay off when it takes to the air My 2 cents!

If you really want to learn to fly " old school "... then forget the whole FPV crap and the gyro crap and all that other " SAFE " TECH crap.. you will never learn to fly that way..
Get hooked up with a good instructor and a buddy box.. And get this ... tried and true.. and proven.. 40 years of people learning to fly on this model.. and it is still in production today... Last edited by jsparky; 10-01-2016 at 08:27 PM. |

Many of the guys I have brought into this hobby started on my Apprentice. Nothing is more defeating than crashing your new pride and joy cause it was too much plane for you. Start slow with any easy flyer. The only reason I reccomend a foamy is parts just need to be bought and replaced to fix it. I do agree with the buddy box system. You will (if your like the rest of us) go through a couple of planes. I have kept my Apprentice and an older thunder tiger tiger stick to train people on.
