Enough is (never) enough....

As I continue in this fine hobby and collect more planes, I have come to the point of asking myself - when is enough enough??

So I pose this question to the venerable and honourded members of Canada's finest web community:

How do you decied what to keep and what to sell off?

There must be some "practical" number of planes worth keeping, aside from those that are simply museum pieces or otherwise too sentimental to give up. I would suppose that those who fly a lot manage to fly most of their stock enough to justify keeping them in flying condition, while others may only fly enough to have one good bird in the hangar.

It would seem an aweful shame to have perfectly airworthy craft hanging around that never get off the ground, while others may have use of them. I'd rather someone fly it into the ground than have it rot in the rafters.

Those are tough questions....enough is when you run out of room or money!Seriously, I have about 17 flight ready planes at the moment, I have tried to thin the herd but they just keep on multiplying over and over again. I enjoy them all.

Sell the ones that duplicate another in the hanger or you haven't flown in a year or so.
I never sell anything that I have kit built or anything that has been crashed and/or rebuilt. All ARFs are fair game for selling though!!

Cheers

This hobby is an addiction.. so it's hard to tell how bad your addiction is.. just like a smoker. Constantly in denial. There is always something you must have to have .. and hard to give up what you already own. lol .. Maybe it's a kind of mental illness..

Re: Enough is (never) enough....

I'm with Gary. Too many planes just means you never get very good with any of them, if you tend to switch up every time you head to the field. Pick a couple favourites and fly the beejeezus out of them. When your bored, move to another.

Having said that, its always nice to have a couple spares, just in case....

Smile Re: Enough is (never) enough....

Like Heli Gal said...it's an addiction. "Plane Crack". Arfs made it more addictive. I'll bet I got enuff wheels, motors, wood, props and hardware to make a dozen 1/2 scale Spruce Gooses and Antonov 225's....minus the turbines.
Of the 25-30 kits and Arfs...only 5 are flyable. The rest are waiting for my retirement..whenever that is. Thank god for the attic, garage and closets or the boss woulda had it all piled at the front door long ago. The main rule here is: NO expansion or moving...so I have to be very resourceful and ingenious to "hide" it all in every crack of the foundation. If I bring home another ARF plane...Ill see crack alright...with a size 6 shoe in it. LOL

Re: Enough is (never) enough....

OK...I guess it's worse than I thought!!

I like the idea of having 2-3 good fliers that you get to know well and fly the heck out of them. If one goes down, build up another. At least that way you have a couple on the go all the time.

I've found that I really enjoy building the planes up and getting them flight ready. Flying them is the reward, of course, and the pride. Each new one I build is better than the last, and I'm learning a lot as I go. Maybe I just need to put an older one in the turf so I can justify another each time...

Bottom line - IT'S ALL ABOUT CONVINCING THE WIFE!!!!

Re: Enough is (never) enough....

for some of us, its just as much the building as it is the flying. And with so many examples of planes, its hard not to want to build. And building, you can do anytime, almost anywhere. Raining out, go build, snowing, go build.. up at 3 am just because, go build.

I respectfully disagree...

I have always had a great selection of models in my hangar - from a bunch of small (.020 to .061 stuff) to the typical .15/.25/.40/.60/.91/120 glow stuff and then some larger gas burners.

In terms of model type, everything from trainers, to fun fly, to racers, to sport scale, to scale aerobatic to SAM/old timers, jets and helis and now electric stuff (indoor and outdoor).

I fly a lot of different planes, and I try and rotate them pretty regularly. I dint fly as much as I used to (1 to 2 outings a week, now its variable but I am aiming for at least once a week) but I can say, flying such a variety of planes all my life has allowed me to be very comfortable flying pretty much anything. And you only get that way by having experience with various models. I think having different types of planes is good.

As for how many? Well, my biggest limiting factor is storage space. If I had more room, I know I would have even more planes... I think I have about 23 or 24 RTF now.
