My Second Plane
I bought my trainer off of ebay, and i'm learning very quickly. I want to buy a second plane (SIG Four-Star 40 or Goldberg Tiger 2), but dont want to pay the high prices for kits in hobby shops. I know there are tons of online distributors in the states, but are there any reliable online distributors in Canada? Also: does anyone have experience ordering kits from US distributors? I have huge fears about my fragile balsa coming through the mail in tatters.
Thanks, Ben |

If you do order from the states, ship USPS to avoid so-called "brokerage fees".

I agree with Ramz. I have been looking all over the internet for kits. With the strength of the dollar, price between the US and Canada are not that different. Also I found not a great difference between LHS, and on-line. I'd rather pay the few extra bucks to buy a kit and inspect it first, and get it right away, than to have to wait several weeks and pay lots more for shipping and all the extra fees. Once you factor in taxes, duty, and possibly brokerage fees, It is usually cheaper at you LHS. But keep in mind that you can sometimes find really good clearance sales on-line.

Kits
Great Hobbies or Hobby wholesale and of course for an ARF Jet_Hobbies all good for price and fast LHS for you not much of an option I guess unless you drive to London or Kitchener.Phone call for what you want would be in order though.I'm sure if you call Murray at RC Guys in Kitchener he could tell you what he has or maybe order what you want and tell you when to pick it up with small deposit

I bought my trainer at hobby wholesale and the shipping was around $15. I don't believe you can buy planes cheaper in the US due to shipping. Tower Hobbies 4 Star 40 $77.99 USD Hobby Wholesale $84.99 CD even before shipping the Tower hobbies plane cost more. Also if I can make a suggestion. I went from my trainer to a 4* and before long I found it kind of dull. If you want to buy an arf buy a Hanger 9 P-51 PTS. A guy at my club (also a fast learner) bought one right after getting his wings and he loves it. Or another great idea is buy one from a fellow club member or some one off the RCC site. In fact there is a 4* for sale right now.

g-manz,
Thanks for your reply. I just assumed that a four star would perform well enough to suit me for a couple of seasons, I never really considered that it may not perform so hot. I will definately look into a higher performance plane. Also, I think I'm learning fast just because my instructor says so. I have nothing to gauge it against. I do not yet have my wings, and have only had 4 flights. By my second flight, the instructor didn't have to touch the controls, and my third I took off. I've yet to learn landings. I guess I'm just eager to start building and thats why I'm looking at my second plane already. Thanks for all your replies guys! Ben |

Get something inexpensive that can fly well with your current engine, something to enjoy for a couple of months while you decide on another aircraft.
Personally, I went from three months on a trainer to a Funtana40, that was nerve wracking. 4star40, TigerII, Sportster, stick, hangar9 pulse... Low wing, tail dragger, sporty (not under powered!), good looking, inexpensive. Keep in mind if you buy a kit vs. ARF you will need covering and covering tools ($40 - $70?).

Although I promote building whenever possible, the manufacturers have made it so that kits cost quite a bit more than ARFs at this time.
Unless you really want to build, you will finder it cheaper and easier to learn with an ARF. Until kits start coming with tanks, spinners, wheels, fuel tanks etc. included, and the cost of a roll of covering gets more reasonable, I cannot in good concience recommend a kit to a new flier with a tight budget. It's really too bad!
