How to select ESC and motor?

Hello,

Im going to buy some 3d EPP airplane (probably Yak from e-foamies - http://e-foamies.com/yak54.html)

I found a motor for it - http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=5684

Now im trying to find an ESC for it on the same site. Motor says its 8AMP... so should i look for same AMP ESC or little more?

They are neat planes. Its too bad they don't recommend a power system for them. You should always upsize the ESC so you don't ruin it. If a motor is rated for 8 amps, go for something like a 12 or 15 amp ESC. Anything smaller, and you risk burning the ESC out, or it thermal shutting down, just when you need it.

Hope this helps, Daren

Re: How to select ESC and motor?

Guess this one is ok?

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...r_(Blue_Series)

And how about servos? I found some - http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ec_Micro_Servo

Is it ok for that kind of plane? Or i need lighter ones?

Thanks

Yep they both have good reviews I would order a few extra servos as it would cost more to buy just the gears than a new one and if you get shipped a faulty one you dont have to wait and pay more shipping

Re: How to select ESC and motor?

+1 for the HXT900 servo's. Cheap and durable.

I will forewarn you however, the HXT900's are known to be power hungry. Upwards of +500mA. It's very easy to overload the 1 to 1.5A BEC built into may ESC's. The loss of power that results will turn your plane into a lawn dart.

Personally, I would use a separate 3A or 5A UBEC if you are using 3 or more of HXT900's:

or

Re: How to select ESC and motor?

Did a bit of digging over on RCG. Seems the plane used to ship as a combo with the MicroDan 2510 3D motor. It produces nearly double the thrust of the motor you are considering. The 3D guys probably know better, but you likely want more than 1.5 times thrust to weight. So figure on 600-900g (20-30oz) thrust for the projected 10-14oz all up weight.

I would do some careful research, read the RCG thread here:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=537302

Other sources for quality brushless motors I would suggest:

www.gobrushless.com (they also distribute the E-Foamie planes)

www.subsonicplanes.com - Motrolfly motor distributor, they also offer CDN shipping for minimal cost.
