ESC throttle gain

Can someone give me a rundown on how throttle gain in a Castle Creations ESC would help with headspeed changes. Also can it help to stop the tail from kicking out on high torque loads? I haven't had much time lately to play with the 450 6s I built but that's the Heli I'm talkin about.

Re: ESC throttle gain

When doing governor tuning on a small Heli, it is first best to dial in your main gyro/FBL settings first. Otherwise you'll never know if your tail kick is from a weak tail gain or a esc governor interaction.
So set a flat throttle curve approximating the headspeed you want, for example 75 or 80 flat curve. In idle up now with the flat curve you can set your tail gain as required. The tail should stay nicely in place as there's no torque issues to overcome as well.

After you've got this set, then enable your esc governor. Higher gains will hold the headspeed tighter. Too high can lead to chatter and fast wags. Too low gain will bog.
No amount of gain will overcome an improperly geared Heli though. Use the Mr.Mel headspeed app to figure out proper gearing for the target headspeed you want.
For example, if you want to target a 2500 headspeed but are geared for a 3500 headspeed, the gearing is too tall for the governor to deal with and there may not be enough torque in the system.
Conversely, if it's the other way around, there may not be enough headroom in the esc to hold the headspeed if you're looking to go higher than what the system can.

Re: ESC throttle gain

Ok the second part is where my issue lies I think. I went to 6s with the same headspeed but never changed my pinion. I will look into this over the next while and see what happens.

Thanks

Re: ESC throttle gain

Thanks Santonio. Looks like my pinion is too small. I'm running the 150T gear with a 11T pinion on a 2010kv motor. Too of RPM. I was going to try this a while I've back but been so busy. Then I stripped a screw trying to take the motor out. Back in the case it went. Now do I have a 13T pinion for this scorpion motor?

Re: ESC throttle gain

What headspeed are you targeting?

To be honest, in a 450 sized Heli, we have almost always found that the best performance is from just gearing the Heli to run a 100 flat throttle curve on the esc.
This gives the most efficient setup. The castle governor is not in the same league as a YGE or Kontronik, so it's tough to get good performance out of it on a small machine.

The only problem with a simple flat curve is that your headspeed will be lower at the end of your flight than at the beginning. But in a 450, it's not the end of the world.
Just be careful with gearing and make sure you're not going to spin the thing up to an insane headspeed. Start with an 80 or 85 curve and go u from there.

At 100% your ESC will be at its happiest and run coolest.

Re: ESC throttle gain

Trying to hit stock headspeed plus a bit more. I'm thinking the 3400 range is plenty. Maybe 3500. Right now I'm way low at 2700. I must have calculated with the stock 121T gear. I changed to the 150T straight because of price and availability. Mostly because I can't fine a slant pinion to fit this scorpion motor shaft. 3.17mm. It works great and 150T are always in stock.

Re: ESC throttle gain

Pinion is hard to find in the straight cut option. Might have to switch back to slant. Anyone know what MOD the straight and slant 450 Trex main gears are?

Re: ESC throttle gain

You can get the Rhino brand pinions 11,12,13t in a set for $7

http://rcflightstore.com/index.php?cPath=188_22_92

The 11t you have is fine if you want to run with 100% and hit your target and then fall a few hundred rpm by the end of to your flight.

If you want to play with the governor, then install the 13t and use the SET RPM feature of the castle software.

Re: ESC throttle gain

I think those are 3.5 shaft. Unless I go brass. I don't want brass.
