Gas Wing Rocking

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
hey Guy's..
having a problem with alot of wing rocking on a Aeroworks Yak 54 QB 50cc

I have Balanced both ways C&G and Laterally..
but still lots of wing rocking ..
Last year flew it maybe 6 times, this year trying to do more with it 3D wise..

The only thing I'm having problems with is doing is High Alpha's and coming out of a loop into a high Alfa as well as inverted.

Any suggestions ? what Else should I be looking for?

Re: Wing Rocking

Wing rock in high-alpha generally has to do with the angle attack. Not all planes like to do harriers at the same angle. Some like to almost be in a hover, some like a much flatter angle.

Try experimenting with different rates on your elevator. I had a Slick that would harrier well on very low elevator input.

Aside from that, burn a lot of fuel or electrons. Harriering isn't nearly as easy as it looks, and almost all planes have a tendency to wing rock unless you compensate with a constant flow of control inputs.

Re: Wing Rocking

Wing rock is also dependant on CG. Some planes will wing rock at the regular CG. Sometimes you have to start shifting the weight back a little at a time and see if you can find a sweet spot.
Some planes don't are less sensitive to CD changes.

Re: Wing Rocking

In my experience, ALL airplanes will wing rock in harriers... some more than others...

On most, the trick is to "catch" the win rock with ailerons and then hold it.. the natural reaction when trying to smooth it out is the following:

Wing drops to the left.. add a bit of right aileron... when it levels out, let go of aileron... wing drops right... "catch" it with left.... and so on....

You will find tho, that usually if you catch the wing rock and then hold the ailerons over, it will usually stay stable.... you then have to compensate with rudder because the the ailerons introduce some yaw..

Most planes will be more stable inverted because the verticle stab in in more airflow. SFG's also help

Re: Wing Rocking

I'm with Bdegan... CG can get most of it out! The other trick I've found works really, really well is to reflex the ailerons up about 2-3 degrees (ie: spoilerons) - it really helps!

If the wing rocks in a harrier after that.... sell it, LOL!!

I've had at least 5 planes and seen many others that have been rock solid in harriers with 0 wing rock!!! - just pull elevators, steer with rudder and it doesn't move! - those are the keeper planes!!

Re: Wing Rocking

I noticed that Low Wing loading planes usually have no wing rock.
Example: Trevor's built Ferrari edge 40% 26 pounds that i own has no wing rock but
My 35% aeroworks extra 300 weighing 30 pounds has ring rock.
Low wing loading usually = no wing rock taking into consideration that cg is not to front.

Re: Wing Rocking

I agree now with above post and ammend my comment that all plabes have wing rock.

I just came in from maidening my 71" 3DHS Slick. Very low wing loading and cg pretty much bang on for imac maneuvers and that thing has absolutely zero wing rock upright or inverted.
