Exclamation Batteries - 35%

I intend to replace the NiMH batteries in my Katana this season

the question is then - what to replace them with ???
Ni-Cad / NiMH is the simplest swap - I have chargers for these
A123 (or similar) sound good too - no need for regulators, but need new chargers

Li-ion et al - need chargers, voltage regulators etc.

What do you guys say

2600 Lions, ok you will need a couple of regs some really good inexpensive ones at Thunderbolt, if you have a Triton thats good for lions.
A123's good also but new charger required I am using 42% products Lions frm TBRC and love em!!!! way better than Nicads or Nihms my 0.2 cents!!!

Hey Colyn -
What are you using in the 12X?
I am thinking about Li-Ion for it also - swap out the NiMH

Re: Batteries - 35%

I have to start fresh for my next two planes so I'm going A123 and two new chargers. Selling all my other stuff. It's the way of the future anyways. No switches or regulators just 42% Zeus and power safe receivers.

Re: Batteries - 35%

In my 35% I use 2 x 2600mah Fromeco lions with 2 x fromeco regulators with a wolverine switch in the receiver.
It's a well proven setup that works awesome.

Cheers,

Will

Re: Batteries - 35%

I am considering both Lithium types and also will be changing the ignition battery.

I like the 42% stuff from Thunderbolt. I am using the 42% engine kill. There is a 42% charger (Troy Built has it )

I am using an AR9100 powersafe receiver with soft switch, and mostly Hitec digital servos, so an A123 install is simplest ----
I thinking of sticking with a 4.8v NiMH for ignition though

Re: Batteries - 35%

Hi Craig, just wondering why you feel you need to change battery types?

Is there a specific problem you have been having with NiMH so that it necessitates a change in format?

Can't help thinking about the old addage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and also "KISS".

Maybe I am just old fashoned or lagging behind the times but NiMH batteries have always been very relyable and very simple to maintain for me. Also they are considerably cheeper than Li-po, Li-on, and A123's and don't require any extra or special equipment to maintain.

OF course I haven't owned nor flown anything larger than 50cc sized gassers so am not fully up to speed on power requirements for much larger planes. My 2700 mAH 6.0v dual NiMH packs have always been more than enough power for me.

Just thought I'd ask your reason(s) for changing and perhaps learn something along the way

Craig, I bought an Enloops pack for my 12x from Sin City Jets, works great and Enloops don't drop off voltage like typical Nimh when stored so, the pack lasts and its always ready to go.

Re: Batteries - 35%

I've got twin 2s LiPos 1800mah, running through a PowerBox Evolution and I have a 2s A123 pack on my ignition running through a PowerBox Digiswitch, which is also acts as a reg for all types of packs.

This is on my 50cc. I know it's overkill for that size of plane, but I'll be using the Evo in my 100cc with twin 2500 2s lipos and a Zeus setup on ignition. I'm wondering if maybe I should up the capacity slightly, as the ignition will be drawing off the rx batteries witg the zeus.

Re: Batteries - 35%

Craig - I flew A123's on my AW 35% 260 all last year. Loved them and will never go back to messing around with batteries that need charging the night before flying (ie NiMH / NiCd).

I have true A123 2300mah packs as well as the knock off 2200 mah packs from Thunderbolt. Two redundant packs for my Futaba receiver - no regulators required and one pack for ignition feeding the DA100 - no regulator required.

I fly A123 1100 mah packs on my 50 cc gassers as well (2 packs to Rx thru separate switches for redundancy and one to DA50 ignition - all unreglated).

I fly 4-5 flights a day - recharge the packs and they are good for several weeks or whenever my next outing is.

If I remember correctly Lee was also flying A123's, Bryan M is also flying them.

The only regulators I use are on my Zenoahs because their electronic ignitions don't like voltages over 6 V.

Bill
