DA-50 Ignition Question

Curious as to how much draw the ignition module pulls on a DA50 in a 10 minute flight? Back story

Maidened my 88" Yak 55 today with freshly charged batteries.
RX Pack - 2100 mah Life
IGN Pack - 2500 mah nimh 4.8 V
Smartfly Opto kill switch

I flew a total of 2 flights with a total run time of 7m42s.
On my 2 nd flight about 3 minutes in, engine surged a few times so i killed the ignition and dead sticked it in.

Knowing this isnt a fuel issue ( all new inside and outside the tank), i decided to recharge my packs.
Rx pack -2100 mah, put 122 mah back in
Ign pack 2500 mah, put 300 mah back in.

This seems excessive to me with only 8 minutes of flight. Wondering if this pack is shitting the bed and caused this surge/failure.

Any thoughts?

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

4.8 volts is the minimum for most dle ignitions, imho I would run a 2s lipo or life. Had a dle 20cc that would do kinda the same thing. After looking at everything it ended up being the battery.

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

Keep in mind nickel metal batteries will loose some charge sitting around. You can loose 200ma buy the time you go to the field and back home.
There not like lipo's

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

I don't know guys - I have been running 4.8V NiMH Ignition packs on my DA 50 for 4 years and I have never had a problem with it...

The current draw is not that excessive but it is possible that the battery pack could be weak or defective.

What was the temperature that you were flying in??

If it was too cold (wind chill) it is possible that the voltage dropped causing problems with the ignition...

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

I'm thinking that's what my issues was, one cell weak in the pack. Motor would run until you tried to go full throttle fast then would burble and fart around, but at normal slow up throttle had no trouble. Put a new battery in and no more issue. I think the extra load on the system when nailing the throttle was pulling the pack down to under the needed voltage.

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

I had the same issue a few years back with 4.8 2700mah Nimh on my DA50.....Changed over to Fromeco 7.4 lion 2600mah and have never had a problem since. Batteries are a matter of choice, how you look after them isn't........

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

Thanks for all the insight everyone. I grabbed a 1300 mah LiFe and will see what happens on the next nice day we have here.

Re: DA-50 Ignition Question

I doubt the battery is the issue. I suspect you have a bad connection in your setup.
