The short nose was required to be used with the original CAP floats that were on the Twin Otter back in the day. Now, Wipline makes floats for the twotter and they were certified with the long or short nose. If the plane was ever on CAP floats, it could still have a short nose installed. (regardless of series)

To add: In 1966 the first DHC-6-100 Twin Otter went into service with a short nose and PT6A-20 engines of 550 shaft horse power (SHP). It was certified on wheels, ski’s and Cap 12000 floats. In 1968 with request for more baggage space in the nose De Havilland began production of the -200 series which had numerous improvements notably the larger nose. As the long nose was not required on floats the optional short nose version was made available.

In 1969 the series 300 was born with more improvements and more powerful PT6A-27 engines of 680 SHP. Because again the long nose version was not required for floats De Havilland did not certify the long nose floatplane and offered a short nose option.

About 10 years ago Whipaire saw a need for new float to supplement the out of production Cap 12000. They produced the Wipline 13000 floats and certified them for both the long and short nose Twin Otters.

The Hanger 9 is a 300 series and would look at home on scale Whipline 13000 floats.

There is an RCMP twin otter still based in Goose Bay Labrador. I know the pilots who fly it.
