What servos too use???
I'm building a 50" WS Otter on floats (shrunk a set of Unionville 6' plans) right now and I'm at a delema... If I put flaps on it, can I get away with using 4 HS-55's in the wing 2 for the ailerons and 2 for the flaps? Or should I just go with a strip aileron and use 2 HS-81MG with torque rods?
I don't know if the 55's have enough torque! but the ailerons would be about 1"X 10" and same with the flaps... The reason for this servo choice is I have these already...I still have to get few for the tail, elev, and throttle so I was thinking HS-81MG or 85MG... what to use!!!

Hs 55's should easily be up to the task. Heck folks put them in mini funtanas that have easily double the aileron.

What type of flaps are going to be using, plain, slotted or double slotted ones?, if you are going to use simple plain flaps i would imagine HS 55s would be fine but if you are making slotted or double slotted types then HS-81MG/85s would be my way to go.... I am sure as hillmanr2 suggested HS55s would be fine for the ailerons. Sammy

I'll vote no.....
Tiny, tiny gears with tiny microscopic teeth in those servos..I don't believe they would survive.....

It's like I need something betwwen a HS-55 and a HS-81, guess maybe an HS-65.. It's just that I have about 8 HS-55 and 4 GWS Naros' sitting doing nothing and it would be hard to justify the $21.00 each for 4 65's.... On my 6' otter I'm using 4 HS-81's in the wing and it's fine so with this being smaller I was hoping 55's would be OK .... Plus I'm going with a 6.0V Rx pack and the specs for a 55 are 18 in/oz.. Still "what to do"

The ailerons are 1" x 10". they may not survive multiple crashes but then neither would the airframe!!!!

55's are great servos for what they are designed for - lightly loaded electrics and gliders..lots of people use lots of these servos with great success.
But there is a large stretch between a small electric and a 50" otter. The speed is greater and the loading is greater, and the weak point is the gear train. I think you would be operating outside the design arena. If even a single tooth on a single gear is chipped, the servo is rendered useless. A bump on a control surface in the air (gust loading, turbulence), or on the water (rough landing, choppy water), or even in the back of the car...doesn't matter..if a gear breaks, the servo is useless. And it doesn't matter how many volts are run through the servo, it doesn't make the gear train any stronger.. Can the otter be controlled with assymetric flaps, or a single aileron? A 65, 65MG, 81MG, or 85Mg would be a better match IMO..

Hs-55s are used a great deal in 3d type planes past foamies. While most applications such as the mini funtana are lightly loaded the surfaces are deflected at very high angles creating a higher flight load on the surface than the very low deflections of a scale aircraft. I would think that if enough force where to be put on the servo to break the gears in this application the airframe would also suffer major damage. All this being said I do not particularly like hs-55's as they don't center well enough for my purposes anymore. I do however feel that the increased wing loading of a larger servo is not warranted for the very small surface to be used. I would not think that enough inertia could be placed on the surface as to cause a failure in the servo without causing structual failure. Again I am not trying to start a heated debate only to hear different points of view.

Hey Darren,
Glad to see you're still building!! I've used the HS-81's before (on inner gear doors) they both stripped out just from being bumped carrying the wing around. I sent them back to Hitech, they upgraded them to the MG version for free (sort of a "here you go stupid, let's see you strip these out!!") Chris
