To the best of my understanding flight modes lessen the work load for the pilot. Where performing certain maneuvers where a specific set of control surface rates helps (ie. Snap roll) the consistency would be a benefit?

With the line-up of Transmitters currently available the possibilities to program in what you need, is limited only by ones imagination. Seeing I am short-sighted in the "Imagination" department, I'll just ask. What are the basic things you all incorporate into your flight modes?

Examples of what you use, and why would be a great help.

Re: Flight Modes, the Why, What and How

LOL Well when you have to do it all (mow the grass, spray the weeds....) you have a lot of time to think. Bet there are a lot of RC pilots that don't know what all goes in to keeping up a flying field.

Flyin', I only have 87 flight in this year. All but 6 have been done on my own field.

I thought you might want it. Great airframe.
But, it sounds like it is headed to Sue Ste Marie.

Now down to 4. Shipped one this morning, ha-ha.

I tried calling to get that Sukhoi Trevor mentioned but the store was too busy.

Dale, the one in your photo above looks damaged, what happened?

Re: Flight Modes, the Why, What and How

Hey Paul.

Cleaning in the garage a bit. My very first Sukhoi, sat waiting for repairs (2yrs). A mint replacement came along. So I let it go, via Garbageman-day. Hard thing for me to do.
Hope you are flying up a storm. Complete with "conditions". he-he.

Re: Flight Modes, the Why, What and How

Just had to give this old thread another kick (searching for Dale's dual fuel tank picture(s)). I have to admit to flying all new planes on rate switches. Once the plane is dialed in, then I put them all on flight modes.

This probably doesn't need to be mentioned but for anyone interested in trying flight modes it may help alleviate so stress. It was mentioned that the switch selection (much easier to do on some radios) can help. A caveat to this is "have your Tx set up for basic controls like engine kill, timer......" and use that on all your planes. Then assign our flight modes to the left-over switches.

I use FMs on all my larger gas engine planes now. I could make my flying experience better by buying another 3 position switch, but it really isn't necessary. I haven't got it all figured out (lucky my planes don't have terribly bad tendencies) and fly straight and true (Thanks to the guy who sent me the link to the Peter Goldsmith trimming chart).

Part of my problem was understanding what was required for each flight mode. The answer to that was at the bottom of the fuel tank! Yes, the flight mode thing is a "personal" thing. Each different plane will require different amount of inputs. Now that I am flying fewer planes, knowing what their tendencies is much easier.

Guys-being-guys when they're starting out usually have too many planes to fly. I wasn't immune. There is a difference between flying a lot (of planes) and flying them well (subjective ). Flight modes allow me to really concentrate on the little things that the plane is doing in each flight mode.

Thanks to the contributors for opening up my eyes to the benefits of trying flight modes.

Re: Flight Modes, the Why, What and How

I find using a Flight condition is really handy for trying out a new adjustment. Do the adjustment or change in your Test condition and if you don't like it switch back to Normal condition. You can go back and forth between conditions to test the new setup.
