whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

Just want to open a discussion on the main causes for maiden crash's, I've had quite a few maidens the last few months and I'm running at about 50% success rate for incident free maidens.

Are maidens that prone to failure or am i not catching something here?

Probably because people :

Rush the build
don't look over things
spot check things
check things more than once.

MOST OF ALL don't read the manual properly

Interesting topic. For me its been CG issues. Had a brain fart a month ago and had a reversed aileron boo-boo too! So attention to detail (or lack of) can make or break a maiden, would be my experience.

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

Just had two maiden incidents back to back, the last one was a aileron servo horn screw came loose during flight giving the surface room to flutter. The aileron ripped off in mid air, i was lucky to bring it down in one peice.

The time before that was a kit build that was too heavy, and ended up as a pile of balsa and fiberglass at the end of a runway.

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

I did my first gas maiden couple weeks ago. I was warned not the idle the new engine in flight for a couple flights. It stalled on a hammerhead (full idle). Luckily I had altitude got it down, landing was hot, rolled into the long grass. Minor damage.
I have seen a couple case of reversed channels.

We have a fairly large edf group at our club. Failure to get enough speed on the grass to lift off is pretty common.

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

A very good tip. Is to have a fresh set of eyes have a good look through. Preferably as close to maiden day as possible. An alternate set of eyes may see something quite simple that has become so fermiliare (spelling?), that you become acustome to it, to the point it looks right from your perspective.
After years of "little things" that happen. Others may wonder why I do things this way, or that. Chances are at some point I have experianced a failure. Such as your servo screw falling out. So, for many years now I employ silicone over my servo arm screws. And other tips.
See you at the field soon.

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

What's the chance of the field being open on a weekday. Is it a weekend only thing or is their flying done everyday?

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

hehe. for me, the main cause of maiden disaster is .. spectators! Do it alone, no pressure. The pressure and distraction of other flyers can really cause you to rush things or skip crucial checks, imho. And you can lie about your failed maiden if you are so inclined (but don't, man, crashes are comedy, and comedy is an enjoyable part of the sport!). I still get nervous as heck, but had good luck maidening the last handful of planes.

OTOH I have a maiden coming up of my heavy balsa Tiger Moth. Makes me nervous to think about it, given the 50 hours or so involved in the build. It will have feiyu unit to help make the maiden go smooth, though.

Re: whats the main causes for Maiden crash's

Weather permitting, all the time. Matt was flying today. I hope to fly Friday, Brodie is planning a maiden on Thursday. And Dan is out most days lately.
