Build vs Plan

Hi
I will explain my problem and than I will ask my question

I m building a TopFlite P-51 Giant , I m in the proscess of installing my retracts . On the plan I measure 1-1/16 from the spar the the mounting plat of the retract . On my build , I installed my retract and the diacut parts won t let me get any closer than 1-3/8 , thats a whole 5/16 of an inch diffrence .

I have checked the builds in RCU and some pictures that are in the thread , and all are installed too far forward of the spar . all of the thread members are haveing trouble installing there wheels , there hitting the top and bottom sheetings . Even one picture shows that the retract is to far forward .

heres my question : DO I FOLLW THE BUILD OR FOLLOW THE PLAN

Well...If the plan shows it in the correct location but the build has it too far forward casuing the problems you mentioned...I would think you should go by the plans.

Can you trim the parts or make new ones to allow your retracts to fit properly? Is this something you already have make yourself but your finding the descrepency? If its the latter and you haven't already built in the mistake, is should be fairily easy to do.

I've seen mistakes in the cut-drawings as opposed to the plans. I've seen this mistake before in one of the kits we produced that wasn't discovered until we had people who purchased the kits phoneing us and asking why the part was different from the plans. It can cause quite a bit of frustration all the way around.

All the best with your build!

Hi

Thanks Gary for youre reply .

Well I ve decided to go with the plans . So this is not called a modification , its called a repair

The error is very clear in the build , and the plans are also very clear .

I checked the plans and took a string and check the struts on the plan . The string says that the struts are inline with each other ( retracted ) . Now if I go by the build , I will be twisting the retract to put the wheel into the possition that they show in the plan . This is what convinced me go go with the plan and not the build

Thank You Gary for youre help

Michel

Michel, what about e-mailing Top Flite? In my short time in this hobby, I've had a couple of things I couldn't figure out, and the Tech Support a SIG and Du-bro has been top drawer stuff. Both gave me clear, concise answers within 24 hours. In fact the Du-bro guy e-mailed me a beautiful hand drawn explanation. Just a rambling thought. Daren
