Making your own sheilded servo leads

Hi,

After reading a verbal description and not really getting it, I GOOGLE'd shielded servo leads and found this.

LONG LEADS



Here's what I've been doing for long servo leads for years. I originally got it from the electronics editor in RC Modeler. I've made up extensions as long as 5-6 feet with no interference problems at all. First, go to you local computer or electronics store and buy as much 26-gauge, 3-conductor, shielded computer data cable as you'll need to make up your servo extensions. In my neck of the woods, this stuff costs about 10-12 cents a foot. It will come with three wires; red, white and black. (same as Futaba) These are wrapped in an aluminized mylar shielding. Outside of that is a bare wire. Finally, that is wrapped with PVC shell.

I usually start with a standard 12-inch servo extension as the base. First I cut the extension in half. Then I solder the red, white and black wires to the data cable on the servo end. On the receiver end, I solder the red and white wires to the data cable wires. I Solder the black to the black data cable wire AND the bare wire. This shields the cable.

That's it. Now you'll have a properly shielded servo extension that's impervious to interference and has all the wires enclosed in a tidy package. The PVC shell has the added benefit of making the servo leads chafe-resistent and it's reasonably light. I'm not an electronics wiz, but my understanding of how it works is that the bare wire acts as an antennea that picks up any stray radio signals (interferrence) and shunts them to the receiver's ground. This and the aluminized mylar shield prevents any interference from reaching the signal wire of the servo.

Note: Don't solder the bare wire to the ground wire (black) at the servo end as this will defeat the shielding

Make absoposolutely sure that you connect ONLY one end of the shield to the negative power lead otherwise you are defeating the whole purpose and making a bigger antenna for interference to come in on.!
