Well i decided to get a DLE 20 and squeeze it into an Aeroworks Yak54.
Things so far are going good with only a bit of figuring out to do.
Here are a few pics...

This may be a fun plane to fly

Thanks for sharing the photos. I was thinking of doing the same thing just because I prefer gas over glow and the convenience of transporting a smaller plane. I'm sure you will be happy with the performance.

Rooky: It looks like you have done a nice job squeezing everything in. However, are you concerned at all about the strength of the firewall? There does not seem to be much left. I hope those blind nuts are surrounded with epoxy. Please don't take these comments the wrong way - having made every mistake known to mankind myself, I tend to be a little cautious. Cheers

Any suggestions on strengthening it up? It seems solid, I'll see where the cg is and go from there. I have a few ideas but am always open to suggestions.

Maybe put some vaseline in the blind nut holes with a Q-tip, being careful not to get any on the back of the firewall, and tie in the back of the firewall to the sides of the fuse with some 2oz fiberglass cloth, maybe the front too. Just an idea.
Have fun.

I just checked the 60-90 extra Aeroworks did with the same engine and it is cut out exactly the same amount, it doesn't look like they reinforced it. But i will check the cg and if i can i will glass it. A little strongr never hurts.

If there is still corner bracing in the motor box I doubt your firewall will go anywhere. If the sides aren't pinned with anything I'd suggest pinning some hardwood dowl into the corner bracing. Other than that, it's probably fine.

Re: Aeroworks Yak54 60-90 and DLE20 project

I agree with Tyler's comments re. bracing the firewall. I have braced mine with carbon fibre dowel (mainly because I had some) but hardwood will probably be just as good. Again, I try to error on the side of caution without added too much weight. For my 30c.c. size gasser I installed three dowels on each side of the firewall and four on the bottom. Rather than putting a hole in the existing firewall to accommodate my rear carbed DLE30, similar to what you did, I simply constructed a new firewall the correct distance behind the existing one and then cut the old one off. Hence I was concerned about the integrity of my work and thus the carbon fibre dowels. They were easy to add and hardly added any weight and gave me some peace of mind. Good luck with your project. Anxious to learn how it flys as my next project may be with a 20 cc gasser. Cheers

Re: Aeroworks Yak54 60-90 and DLE20 project

Can you check a measurement for me ?
I am looking for the distance from the centerline to the outside edge of the muffler. Trying to see if this will fit inside the cowl of a plane I want to put it in.
One other measurement, mounting rails to top of cylinder head.

Thanks in advance
Brad
