No more soldering Deans for me. I've just ordered in some Anderson Power Poles and a crimper. All of the my Deans connectors are getting pitched for good.

I bought everything from Durham Radio in Whitby, Ontario. Should have it by next week:

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

Interesting...why do you prefer them over deans Philapa?

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

Power poles are rated higher and there is no soldering as it's a crimped connection. They also have a positive lock (they click together) and are easy to get apart. They are slightly larger than deans though.

If I wasn't so heavily invested in deans with 4 chargers, 30+ vehicles and about that many batteries I would switch too.

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

I think that if the crimper wasn't 50 bucks I would be more interested.

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

I believe that the Deans are rated at 50 Amps continuous. The ones you mentioned have 3 versions rated at 15, 30 and 45 amps; from the link.

The contacts and housings for all 3 APP sizes are actually the same size, the only thing that changes is the crimp end of the contact and the gauge of wire it will accept.

You can get bigger APP's... all the way up to 180amps.

As for why I am switching...

1) I have big fingers and Deans are difficult for me to separate.

2) It's very hard to separate a Deans connector without pulling on the wire. IMHO, there is a potential for the wire to break/fail.

3) Although APP's do not 'lock' together with a clip, they do have a positive engagement which make it harder to separate due to vibration, etc.

4) APP's are not gender specific (ie. there is no male or female). You never have to buy different male & female ends ever again. However due to the dovetail design, a single pair of connectors can be oriented up to 12 different ways. This way you can key your connectors to prevent mating them incorrectly. ie. So you cannot plug your charger into your ESC.

Even if you do not choose to key your connectors, the basic configuration prevents you from reversing polarity.

5) APP housings can be reused. Replacement terminals are cheap, less than $0.20 ea.

The contacts can be soldered instead... and you can skip the use of a crimper.

IMHO, $50 for a crimping tool is cheap. You should see what crimping tools for other connectors cost!

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

Back to the topic...

It will be interesting to see how this whole Lipo shipping thing plays out. There are some tightening regulations being considered, and both government and just about every electronics mfg in the world are involved.

Re: Hobbyking and battery shipping

Shipping of lipos for hobby use is tiny compared to the number shipped for other electronic devices.

Think of how many lipos there are in a crate of laptops or cellphones.
